Taliban snipers fire on the 101st and die

Taliban snipers fire on the 101st and die

Three Taliban snipers engage an army patrol. The soldiers engage the enemy with M-2 heavy machine guns and call in F-15s for target practice.

Good for the Taliban. More of them need to show the gumption to get themselves killed. Hopefully, none of our guys got hurt. (I can't access Youtube at work. Too many of us were using it to watch training videos.)

Seems like a lot of dough to kill a handful of dudes.

Those were my thoughts. But those snipers are probably worth way more to the Taliban than the bombs are worth to us. Still lame though, they just called in some jets.

I wonder why the snipers were all together like that.

I wnder what they mean by "sniper". Does it refer to a bona fide specialist or to anyone shooting from cover?

It's kind of doubtful they were as well trained as our snipers are. But the basic definition of a sniper is someone trained to selectively target the enemy from concealment, or from a distance beyond the enemy's detection range. Most First World snipers are also trained in field craft, infiltration, camouflage, special recon and observation, target acquisition, and some really basic trauma first aid. (Every sniper I've ever met, and most Spec Ops types, carry tampons. Tampons are wonderful for stopping bleeding in the event you get shot. There's a new product on the market for veterinarians, called Vetigel, that stops bleeding, and promotes healing. It should be entering military testing soon. <Link>)

There are very few soldiers in Arab armies or militias that we would consider well trained.

That would be a big difference. I would refer to them as marksmen instead. Snipers is misleading if they weren't that well trained.

I thought they were snipers, that's why I thought they were valuable and made sense for the jets.

Now jets just seems like too much dough again.
