I buy a lot of humanely raised stuff that I briefly research online. I always look for independent outfits when possible. There are quite a few that you can trust. Not sure about seafood so I go with the "wild caught".

nope. That's one of those things that people laugh about & take the $$$. There is a Bubba-Gump restaurant at one of the casinos in Biloxi. Overpriced, tasteless....probably straight from the ponds of Vietnam!

When we visited Mobile there was a place, two places we went to a couple times. Both owned by the place that owns the Ruth's Chris franchise. One was called Bluegill Cafe or something like that, it was ok. The other was called Felix's which was outstanding IMO.

I think the necessity of using all the antibiotics, etc to be successful is part of the reason. This nation won't allow that. Catfish farming is very common in the south but they can raise them without the need of extra chemicals. Native species and all that stuff...

Dirty Jobs did an episode on a Tilapia farm in I think Arizona, or somewhere out west.

I think we farm a lot of seafood actually.

Oysters I had in Alabama (during the Gulf spill) were farm raised in New England, I asked before ordering them.

The Bluegill is an old name in Mobile. I liked them better before the current owners. It was more of a Mom & Pop type place. I have been to Felix's and don't think they are as good as the Original Oyster House. OOH has fresh, Gulf seafood and you can taste the difference. They serve an appetizer of Flame Grilled Oysters that is heavenly!

I miss those days when I'd collar a friend, pump 10 gallons of gas into the boat, grab a case of beer, and drag my 20' trawl net. A local guy showed me the ropes one night and we caught 7 shrimp and a crab trap. That was the first and worst night. 3 weeks later and in another part of the Mississippi Sound, we dragged the net for 30 minutes and caught half of a 48 qt Igloo cooler of nice fat brown shrimp. We made 2 more drags and nearly topped off another 48qt cooler and called it a night. We were home by 11pm and by 2 am, my wife and I had about 20 quart milk cartons full of tails. I've not done it in over 20 years, but it was lots of fun. Not all nights were as productive. For about 4 years, I never bought a shrimp.
Only in America.... could the rich people - who pay 86% of all income taxes - be accused of not paying their "fair share" by people who don't pay any income taxes at all.
