Married filing separately = single basically from a tax bracket standpoint, unless it changed which I don't think it has.

edit: and I could be wrong but I don't think. I'm a CPA but not a practitioner, I suck at taxes.

Great at CPE tax test taking though, but practice, nah. $#@! my taxes up every year.

It is different. As in ass rape range different for higher incomes. The only couple that I knew that did this outside of a contentious divorce situation was where one worked for a government agency in an unofficial capacity and she was a partner in a major law firm that wanted no controversy. I added the bold.

I think one of the issues was survivors benefits. If you are married and the higher income partner dies, the survivor can claim benefits off their income and receive more at retirement. In fact, you don't have to be legally married, you can draw under common law marriage rules. Gays could not do this without legal marriage rights.

There is also the SS disability issue. The disabled person can draw from the highest earner. I have a friend whose ex-husband is drawing disability based on her income. Again, gays can't draw from this without legal marriages.

If your spouse is on Disability SS when he dies the wife gets his SS based on what he would have gotten without disability. Disability SS only gets paid to the person disabled it is not passed on.

If your married 3 times all your wives are entitled to your SS as long as you were married to them long enough.
