When Russian surgeon Leonid Rogozov developed appendicitis in Antarctica, he had no choice but to remove his own appendix - he was the only doctor on the expedition. As his condition deteriorated, he feared his appendix would burst and almost certainly kill him. With a general anaesthetic out of the question, he administered a local anaesthetic to his abdominal wall. Once he had cut through it, he had to complete the operation without any further pain relief.
