Could sports stars of old be the superstars now that they were then?

This is always a hot debate, got to thinking of this seeing the Yogi Berra thread, take him, Babe Ruth, Bobby Orr, Terry Bradshaw, any of those guys from decades ago, the stars and put them into today's pro sports.

Would they be just as successful?

I say no way in hell, most of them wouldn't make today's pro teams. Different games, different players.

Babe Ruth couldn't make the MLB minors.

I'm braced for the ensuing hate, BTW.

You missed the point, not if they grew up, trained, etc. - same people, put them in their old days prime in a time machine and bring them here, now to play.

That's not a fair analysis. For example, Julius Caesar would be thoroughly confused by modern weapons and their use in battle. But make a modern general born with Caesar's or Alexander's talent and brought up on modern tactics and he would win every war.
On the outside, trickling down on the Insiders

We won't live free until the Democrats, and their voters, live in fear.

Everything before the first Super Bowl was prehistoric.

I know that Babe Ruth would slap the hell out of today's pitching.

I became a fan of the 49ers when Tittle was the QB. Tittle had different rules and still won his championship with the Giants of NY.

Ken Stabler of the Raiders could flat throw the ball and was a winner. So was Daryl Lamonica. Don't imagine the old days players were runts. Those guys were still very big.

Rules changed, schemes changed but talent wins every time.

I recall the winning Johnny Unitas. I saw Joe Namath playing Oakland and toss a touchdown as he was in the process of being knocked on his butt. As he fell, he tossed a perfect touchdown.

I still think of Steve Young as one of the best of all time quarterbacks. The man was a force to be reckoned with. He was as accurate as Joe Montana and could easily rush for touchdowns. Who can ever top the Great Jerry Rice. I saw him play a lot. It was amazing to see what he did to defenses.

Back in Ruth's day, pitchers were pitching a lot slower. They were also expected to pitch all 9 innings.

Who knows if Babe would do the same. Probably not.

Babe Ruth's first major league home run was here in Toronto.
