French Model 1877 Issue Infantry Greatcoat

He is asking a lot so maybe my reluctance won't put me out of the running. The French infantry went to war in these in August 1914.

Double breasted dark blue "iron gray" wool capote modele 1877 has a standing collar, rear half belt, bayonet support loop on the left side of the waist, and brass flaming bomb buttons throughout. The red wool collar insignia and dark blue shoulder rolls are costume house or collector replacements. Skirt remains untrimmed, with the distinctive button holes on the front corners that allow the skirt to be buttoned back in the tradition of French and Belgian troops with the skirt sides folded back and attached to the back buttons. Interior body is lined in natural unbleached cotton with maker, size and issue markings, committee of reception stamp with illegible date, and several later costume house property and size stamps. As we all have learned, if not for costume houses many rare WWI issue uniform articles would simply no longer exist! This one shows wear several unobtrusive stitched repairs, retains nice strong color. Scarce Poilu overcoat as issued during the early months of WWI. II

I've looked into reenacting but I haven't taken the dive yet. A close friend is a member of the 3rd NJ. I went to Yorktown to watch the 225th anniversary events.

This is my favorite era because the early war uniforms still have that 19th century panache to them.

Anyway, yeah, but someone bought it. I just looked. Rats. Another will turn up I'm sure. I have the red trousers and the kepi (3 of them actually).

You should by all means absolutely give reenacting a trial run. It will give you a new perspective on the life of the character you chose to play.

In the meantime back in the US.....during the 1870s. Our Homies was stylin and profilin. O0

The 1870's saw the rise of the sack suit to widespread popularity, on any street many fashionable young men could be seen in narrowly tailored sack suits. But as this drawing shows, it was still common to see frock coats during the day. It also remained common for gentlemen to pair mismatched separates instead of a suit, particularly common was fawn or light brown trousers with black coats.

Most distinctive of this era is the slim cravat with very small bow tie as seen on the gentleman in the back left. Also, notable is the hairstyle, cut very short and oiled flat. This was paired with a variety of different facial hairstyles as seen above. Some of the most common were - the full moustache on the back right, the Van Dyke in the back middle. Many gentlemen still wore full beards or walrus moustaches, long drooping and oiled.

The gentlemen pictured above were Irish freedom fighters who were released from prison and exiled to the country of their choice by the British Goverment. These five left Liverpool on the Cuba and arrived in New York to a hero's welcome from the Irish Community.

To recreate these looks: choose a high notch-collar such as the Logan or a low cut shawl collar such as the Gambler Brocade. The Highland Town Coat or the Highland Frock Coat are both good choices and reflect the diversity of the decade. Choose what you like best .....snip~
