It was a real video as far as I know.

I saw it on the network evening news.

Why give a passenger liner that kinda power to weight ratio?

redundancy, engine loss on take off is the most common cause of crash, then add pilot error to the mix....

With more powerful engines you actually save fuel during cruise and etc.. etc.

I'll buy the redundancy thing, but if the second part is true why don't we all have 500 cubic inch hemis in our cars? I'm pretty sure bigger engine = more fuel every time.

Jet turbines are much different than piston engines. Technology has allowed us to build more powerful engines that also use less fuel. Take a look at a 707 from the 60's and an engine from a 777 today, much more power and uses half the fuel.

Same thing is true of piston engines. that doesn't mean that the smaller less powerful ones don't use less gas.

I think it is cool. But I guess they won't take off like that with passengers on board.

Flying into Baghdad was sort of like that in reverse, with a cork screw move.

I got that on my last Iraq deployment. Me, the unit XO and our doc (we had to get there early) with a company of engineers from the 82nd ABN. They did the jump prep stuff really loud. It was a great time.

It's a different beast all together. With new technology (3D printing, lighter materials, etc) you are able to get more hp with less fuel use of smaller older engines.

Obviously if you are comparing a 2015 power plant with a 2015 smaller power plant, then yes the smaller engine will use less fuel. But say, a 2004 power plant with 2015, the bigger engine will probably use less fuel.
