At zero dark thirty on August 6, 2011, two U.S. Army CH-47D Chinooks with some of the most highly trained military personnel in history took off for a special mission in Afghanistan. They had Apache gunships and a AC-130 in support.
For unexplainable reasons the escorts were not permitted to "prep" the landing zone (shoot the $#@! out of it). There were eyes on enemy combatants. An enemy fighter with a rocket propelled grenade (RGP) is said to have taken out Extortion One-Seven. 38 killed. 17 from the Gold Squadron of the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (known as Seal Team 6).
It was the single largest loss of SoF forces in US history and was directly caused by the US's inability to fight a counter insurgency war. That landing zone should have been prepped (shot to $#@!) regardless of civilian presence.
