    Extortion 17 (“one-seven”)

At zero dark thirty on August 6, 2011, two U.S. Army CH-47D Chinooks with some of the most highly trained military personnel in history took off for a special mission in Afghanistan. They had Apache gunships and a AC-130 in support.

For unexplainable reasons the escorts were not permitted to "prep" the landing zone (shoot the $#@! out of it). There were eyes on enemy combatants. An enemy fighter with a rocket propelled grenade (RGP) is said to have taken out Extortion One-Seven. 38 killed. 17 from the Gold Squadron of the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (known as Seal Team 6).

It was the single largest loss of SoF forces in US history and was directly caused by the US's inability to fight a counter insurgency war. That landing zone should have been prepped (shot to $#@!) regardless of civilian presence.

The mission was not even necessary. A force of Rangers was in enemy contact and Extortion 16 and 17 were sent to help. But the Rangers were in complete command of the field. They didn't need help. And Tier 1 troops are not typically used as babysitters.

In defense boys in contact take precedent over boys who aren't. The QRF was redeployed because another unit needed it. The problem isn't the idea of necessity, the problem is the idea that the U.S. can win a war on a skeleton crew. Sure we can $#@! $#@! up. But win a war? No.

No. That was another instance of a CH-47 being shot down by a camel jockey with an RPG. That was Operation Red Wings II. After the Seal Team (Luttrell's) was compromised the SoF commander made the choice to take off on a rescue operation without gunship support. And this was Seal Team 10.

Tier 1 troops are not supposed to be on QRF.

Another symptom of running on a skeleton crew. I read an article a couple weeks ago about how watered down Team 6 is these days. They've used them so much that their vets are burnt and the unit is now comprised of the 2nd best.

We will reap what we sow when we are no longer able to secure Americans at home. It's not far off. I predict that within a year we will see a major terrorist event within US borders that will galvanize the citizenry like it did 14 years ago.

Yes, it was either the NYT or WAPO that ran the article about how Seal Team 6 (all of SoF) was being run into the ground.

I posted it here and commented on it.
