Government outlines rules for driverless cars

If this is going on in DC, displaying road rage would be authentically convincing.

Didn't think this science was in test phase.

Drivers will also be required to be “conscious of their appearance to other road users”, which means they must look as though they’re actually driving in order to prevent confusing other motorists.

Talking on the phone, eating or drinking or putting your feet up on the dash are all banned, while highway authorities will be instructed to keep a close eye on drivers within testing zones.

Don't worry, they can make that up in increased DUI arrests as all self driving vehicles that aren't electric will be automatically legally impaired due to the ethanol content of their gasoline.

Officer: I'm sorry sir, you are going to have to step out of your vehicle.

    Motorist: What? Why?

Officer: Your car blew over 10 times the legal limit for alcohol, we are going to have to impound it.

    Motorist: Wait, what?

    Car bomb threat...

'Autonomous Vehicles Provide an Avenue for Terrorism,' Congress Is Told
February 15, 2017 - As the nation speeds toward development of fully self-driving vehicles, here's a speed bump to consider: Not only is hacking a "real threat," but "autonomous vehicles provide an avenue for terrorism as well," Congress was told on Tuesday.
Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) asked RAND Senior Information Scientist Nidhi Kalra, "How real is the threat of vehicle hacking" when it comes to autonomous vehicles.

It is a very real threat. There -- transportation is one of the areas that receives a lot of attention from hacking because it is -- you know it's a way to disrupt our transportation system. So there's a great concern there. And cyber security is not something that can sort of be shrink wrapped on top of the vehicle because there's so many parts that contribute to the ultimate vehicle that it has to be baked in from the ground up.

And it's not only hacking for fun and profit, but autonomous vehicles provide an avenue for terrorism as well because there's a way to use these vehicles to -- you know -- the threat is no longer sort of suicide bombers and -- that blow themselves up, but now we have vehicles that can drive around. So, I don't want to overstate the risk at this time, but we need to think very broadly about cyber security, not only as a hacking opportunity but also as a terrorism opportunity.

Although hacking concerns were discussed at the hearing, no one else mentioned terrorism. The hearing was conducted by the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection.

I recall a joke from years ago - something about a car manufacturer saying that if his product were more like a computer, it would crash ten times a day. Yeah...

I have to believe that the only people who will ever be totally comfortable riding in an "autonomous vehicle" are those who have, themselves, never driven a car. For someone who has driven for years or even decades, the urge to take control - to take things into their hands and drive - will be too great to allow for any real comfort or peace of mind.

This whole thing bothers me. We don't have driverless trains and they can't even change lanes much less turn or go anywhere there aren't tracks. why do we thing driverless cars are gonna work well?

I think the people who drive with one hand on a smart phone and one hand on a cheeseburger or choc malt or whatever and change lanes using their knee to turn the steering wheel might like not having to actually drive. Same thing for people who get up in the morning and throw on their clothes and drive to work with just enough time to not be late might like the extra stress filled minutes to sleep instead. There is always fear of change, especially if its a big change. 10 or 20 years in people will look back and think "how did they live like that."

I know what you mean, but in the case of driverless cars I honestly don't believe that's ever going to happen, to any degree. Unless, as I said before, it happens to a generation that has never driven and really doesn't understand what all is entailed in navigating through city traffic - the complex situations, the insanity and the incompetence that you have to allow and compensate for, and the split-second decisions one has to make in order to stay alive and keep your vehicle in one piece. If cars and trucks had a top speed of, say, 15 mph, I might be comfortable with it. Maybe.
