That is clear to me that Dr. Who is an insurance expert. But some of you guys act as if you have no need for health insurance since per you folks, government pays for it. But who pays taxes but you Canadians? Are you able to afford health insurance because you pay nothing or next to nothing that we pay for in this country, such as super high costs of prisons and things like defense spending supposedly for the good of the world?

Agree, Canadians know more and are affected more by US politics, than the reverse.

I used to know quite a bit about your healthcare system, knew a man who was on a team went to Europe to research healthcare systems there for the CA government in order to design theirs/yours. I don't like such systems but do appreciate that it is provincially controlled, has feedback mechanisms from consumers on up, does let you opt from private care (but still pay taxes for public), but where it does keep costs down at all it has the effect of creating shortage of doctors, nurses, etc--at least up to a few years ago, I haven't followed it much of late.

    Your question makes no sense.

Canadians pay taxes at various levels that ends up being funneled into the healthcare system. Our department of defense is also funded by taxpayer money. Our prison population isn't as ridiculous as yours but there are still an astounding amount of non-violent drug offenders that shouldn't be there who are costing us money that we should be paying for.

No, it made perfect sense and you proved it did by responding to it in context of my questions/statements.

To funnel this down, why do you need insurance for health care when the government pays for it?

Each province and territory provides different things based on what they interpret to be essential. Most employers in Ontario offer supplemental insurance to make up for gaps in OHIP, basically, which covers things like massage therapy, chiropractors, psychologists, dental services, optometry services, life insurance, disability insurance, etc. I paid about $50/month for mine which covered everything to an extremely high degree - dental up to like $5000/year (plus additional money for cosmetic procedures), optometry to like $2000/year, out of country insurance up to $1 million, so forth. I put in $50 each month and my employer matched it.

    I'm assuming that's what you're referring to?

Every right is an obligation to someone else. For example, to be able to enjoy your life right, I am obligated to not kill you. If I kill you I end your right to life. Simple.
