When the Anbar Awakening happened, in 2006, we had 141,000 boots on the ground not including contractors. 25,000 troops today for Syria is not serious if your end game is the destruction of the Islamic State. If used properly they could lay waste in a limited area.

You aren't qualified for geopolitical discussions. In the past you claimed to have been a very senior DoD civilian and said that you never actually served (in uniform). I think you were never a senior DoD civilian.

Surge architects began to fund and supply Sunni Tribal leaders directly rather than going through the Iraqi government, for example, the Surge wasn't all ground troop surges and their different rules of engagement. Pete. The Surge engaged to end sectarian violence and bring the three factions within that government to quit their infighting, it went well beyond combat troops....lad. Smart the fck up.

Directly to the locals Pete. And long before troops showed up. The Awakening included boots on the ground, it didn't take a huge military effort. Other locales did see heavy fighting to end sectarian violence. The Awakening was in full swing changing realities in Iraq long before the first 'hat' showed up. And you know it. It would not take 100,000+ American boots on the ground, not even close. And you know that too.
