Oscar Pistorius given six years for Reeva Steenkamp murder
Wed, 06 Jul 2016 - South African Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius is sentenced to six years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.
The verdict comes after his initial five-year conviction for manslaughter was changed to murder last December on appeal. He was taken immediately to jail. Both the prosecution and defence can appeal. Pistorius, 29, shot Reeva Steenkamp four times through a locked toilet door in February 2013.

He admitted shooting her, but said he mistook Ms Steenkamp for an intruder and acted out of fear. In an hour-long session, Judge Thokozile Masipa said mitigating circumstances, such as rehabilitation and remorse, outweighed aggravating factors for deviating from the prescribed 15-year sentence for murder.

Dressed in a dark suit, Pistorius listened to the judge mostly with his head down. Ms Steenkamp's parents, Barry and June, sat on the other side of the courtroom, which was packed with journalists and observers. Pistorius has already served one year in jail.

The six-time Paralympic gold medallist made history by becoming the first amputee sprinter to compete at the Olympics, in 2012 in London, running on prosthetic "blades". He had his legs amputated below the knee as a baby.

The never-ending saga of Oscar Pistorius...

Oscar Pistorius: Prosecutors appeal for longer sentence
3 Nov.`17 - South African prosecutors are appealing for a longer sentence for Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius for murdering girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
They told the Supreme Court of Appeal the six-year sentence was "shockingly light" and he should get 15 years. Defence lawyers say the sentence handed down by a lower court is appropriate. Pistorius claimed he shot dead Ms Steenkamp on Valentine's Day in 2013 after mistaking her for a burglar at his home in the capital Pretoria. The lower court justified deviating from the prescribed 15-year sentence by saying mitigating circumstances such as rehabilitation and remorse outweighed aggravating factors such as his failure to fire a warning shot. But prosecutor Andrea Johnson said the sentence did not match the gravity of the crime.

Pistorius, 30, is not in the court in Bloemfontein. He is being held at the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre prison in Pretoria. He was initially given a five-year term for manslaughter in 2014, but was found guilty of murder on appeal in 2015. Pistorius shot Reeva Steenkamp four times through a locked toilet door in February 2013. Previously, the six-time Paralympic gold medallist had made history by becoming the first amputee sprinter to compete at the Olympics, in 2012 in London, running on prosthetic "blades". He had his legs amputated below the knee as a baby.

    He shouldn't have doubled-down...

South African court doubles Oscar Pistorius's prison sentence
24 Nov.`17 - State argued athlete’s original sentence of six years for murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was ‘shockingly lenient’
A South African appeal court has more than doubled the former Paralympian Oscar Pistorius’s prison sentence for murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The supreme court of appeal (SCA) increased Pistorius’s sentence from six years in prison to 13 years and five months. Pistorius killed Steenkamp by firing four bullets from a handgun through a closed toilet door in his luxury home in Pretoria on Valentine’s Day 2013. He claimed he mistook her for a burglar.

Steenkamp’s family welcomed the increased sentence and said it showed that justice could prevail in South Africa. “This is an emotional thing for them. They just feel that their trust in the justice system has been confirmed this morning,” Tania Koen, a spokeswoman for the Steenkamp family, said. High court judge Thokozile Masipa initially sentenced Pistorius to five years for culpable homicide in 2014. The sentence was much lower than many had expected and was widely criticised. He served only 10 months of the five-year sentence in prison before being released and put under house arrest.

The state appealed against the culpable homicide conviction, and it was later replaced with murder by the SCA in 2016. Masipa handed down a six-year jail term in July 2016 – described as “shockingly lenient” by state prosecutors. The athlete was not in court for Friday’s ruling, where the court handed down the minimum 15-year sentence prescribed for murder in South Africa, then subtracted the years Pistorius had already served in jail. Critics said Pistorius had received preferential treatment as a wealthy, white celebrity.

Pistorius, who turned 31 on Wednesday, has always maintained he fired in the mistaken belief that an intruder was hiding behind the door. His lawyers have just one avenue open to them if they want to challenge the new sentence handed down by the supreme court, and that is to appeal to the constitutional court, the highest court in South Africa.

Paralympian Oscar Pistorius loses bid to cut 13-year jail term for murder of Reeva Steenkamp
April 10, 2018 - OSCAR Pistorius will not get a reduction in his 13-year jail term for the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp after a South African court rejected the disgraced paralympian’s appeal.
SOUTH Africa’s highest court has rejected Oscar Pistorius’s request to appeal against his 13-year jail term, ending the long legal battle over his killing of his girlfriend in 2013. The former Paralympic athlete, 31, had asked the Constitutional Court to review the jail term, which was increased to 13 years in November. But the court ruling released on Monday said that “the application for leave to appeal is dismissed” as it was not a constitutional matter. The ruling was dated March 28.

    Reports Pistorius appealing prison sentence

Pistorius shot dead Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013 when he fired four times through the locked door of his bedroom toilet, later saying that he thought she was an intruder. He was originally convicted of culpable homicide — the equivalent of manslaughter — in 2014, but his conviction was upgraded to murder on appeal. Pistorius also tried to take the murder conviction to the Constitutional Court, but it also refused to hear the matter.

His legal team and state prosecutors have fought through the courts over the length of his sentence. “This is the end of the road. There are no other legal options available,” National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Luvuyo Mfaku told AFP, welcoming the ruling. Tania Koen, the Steenkamp’s family lawyer, said that Reeva’s parents had “always had faith in the justice system” and had no further comment to make. “June and Barry have been focusing their time and energy in the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation which was established in her memory,” Ms Koen said.

The year before he killed Steenkamp, Pistorius became the first double-amputee to race at the Olympics when he competed at the London 2012 games. Previously a role model for disabled people worldwide, his trial generated international headlines. In a television interview, he said he believed an intruder was in the house and “instant fear” drove him to grab his gun and walk on his stumps towards the bathroom before opening fire.

Reeva Steenkamp’s parents June and Barry Steenkamp have created a foundation against domestic violence in their daughter’s name.

It is unclear when Pistorius, who is detained in prison outside the capital Pretoria, could be eligible for parole. “That’s the end of the road for Mr Pistorius in terms of pushing the matter forward,” local radio station EWN quoted national prosecution authority spokesman Luvuyo Mfaku as saying on Monday.
