Did you know that NZ has dozens of oil fields off its coasts? Norway and Scotland became rich with their oil fields. We have the same potential.
But do we want it? We are already a reasonably wealthy country. Why would we want more riches?

Looks as though we are gaily better-educated than most - according to the Economist Intelligence Unit. NZ comes 8th in world rankings. The US 17th. http://thelearningcurve.pearson.com/the-report
And we seem to have the highest number of students going on to tertiary education.
Mind you, we need that. Thousands of these well-educated people flit off to prop up the economies of Australia, the UK, US and others.

I saw The Thin Red Line in Manhattan back in 1998.
Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.
