You said we did not provide a significant force after Gallipoli. We provided just as much on the Western front in WW1, the African desert, Crete, Italy and the Pacific in WW2.

In fact, we provided a higher percentage of troops per capita (10%) than any other nation in both wars and took the most casualties of any Allied country other than Britain. That includes the US.

No, I said Gallipoli is precisely where you stand out.

Again, the ANZAC Corps was usually top notch as far as the British Commonwealth was concerned. All I'm saying is that you were never very numerous to effect much of anything. For example, do you honestly believe a relative handful of armed Kiwis would be able to prevent a civil war in a region where someone was genuinely intent on having one?

What do you expect from a country with a population of 1 million in 1914 and 2 million in 1939?

We did what we could. And Gallipoli was no more or less significant than any other campaign we fought in.

And, yes. The East Timorese and Solomon Islanders were fighting amongst themselves. That's why were there.

    For 10 years.

Senior US intelligence officials in NZ for 'routine meeting' - PM

    EXPAND
Prime Minister John Key. File photo / Christine Cornege

Prime Minister John Key says senior US intelligence officials were in New Zealand last week for a "routine" meeting with officials from several countries, but maintains he still does not known [sic] exactly who was in town.
Key never knows who's in town. It's a policy.

..he did not recall the name of the visitor or the nature of the meetings, saying it was probably written "on a piece of paper" but he did not recall the details.Mr Key is the minister in charge of the intelligence agencies, the Security Intelligence Service and Government Communications Security Bureau.
He said this morning that he had still not checked that piece of paper and still did not know exactly who the visitor was
He survives on wayward "pieces of paper".

    Sorry guys. We give up.

Climate Change Minister Tim Groser has defended New Zealand's decision to drop out of the Kyoto treaty at global climate talks, describing the move as "ahead of the curve".

His comments came as new research showed it was now unlikely the goal of 2C of global warming above pre-industrial levels could be achieved, with the amount of heat-trapping pollution increasing 3 per cent worldwide last year.
You'll have to manage the "curve" that is producing your freak storms, floods and droughts on your own.

We live next to Antarctica which, unlike the Arctic, is not melting. So, in our common parlance, "We're alright Jack".

Democracy is not just about politicians or parliamentary (aka Congress in the US) processes.

    It's about public activism.

Brazilian oil giant Petrobras has pulled out of New Zealand, but the Government is hoping another company will pick up from where it left off. The state-run energy company has handed back its prospecting licences, Prime Minister John Key confirmed this morning.
The world's third-biggest oil company with sales of close to $150 billion a year, Petrobras had planned to invest $300m over the next three years in exploration and production.

A campaign by East Cape iwi Te Whanau a Apanui, Greenpeace and other groups against Petrobras' exploration of the Raukumara Basin started early last year.
"The likelihood of oil from a deep sea blowout washing onto the beautiful beaches and coastline of the East Cape and Bay of Plenty just went down by 100 per cent," says Greenpeace Climate Campaigner Simon Boxer of the Petrobras decision.
Petrobras denies it surrendered to the prospect of tattooed Maori warriors on waka (war canoes) assaulting their rigs. But we know differently.

NZ does not want to have its several hundred oil reserves plundered by international corporations. It is not wealth we need at the cost of our environment.

I expect exactly that (bold). Don't be so defensive. If you believe that a handful of Kiwis kept the east Timorese from a civil war they genuinely wanted via their spiffy uniforms and dry New Zealand humor that's OK.

How many men did New Zealand actually send to East Timor? From what I can find on a brief search NZ never contributed more than a company of infantry at a time. Yes, you do what you can or what New Zealand voters will tolerate at any rate. The thing is...it isn't much.

Love the pith helmets. Not sure if these chaps are Kiwis or Aussies though.

Edit: They might even be British. It doesn't say. Great shot though.

Speak of Gallipoli, I just love this apocryphal specimen of miscommunication:

A ranking British officer at Gallipoli happened to notice the forlorn look of a new young recruit from Down Under. With empathy he approached the lad, placed his hand on his shoulder, and gravely asked, "Have you come here to die, my boy?" "Wha'?" replied the soldier. "Naw, I kime 'ere yis-tuh-die."
"There is no such thing as knowledge, just belief."
