Speaking of idiom, with particular reference to the word "forlorn", which I have used above, I learned from Kipling's "Something of Myself" that just being "lorn" is bad enough, never mind going to the extreme of being "forlorn". And that one needn't bother being "overwhelmed", when being "whelmed" quite suffices. :>)
