Then there might not be much our SPCA could teach you.

Disaster capitalism is alive and well in NZ.

As you may know, one of our major cities was largely destroyed by earthquakes.

Our current government, which embraces Milton Friedman like an addict shooting a fix, has suspended democratic processes in the city in question and is busy re-organising even undamaged schools to fit its ideology of efficient and profitable exploitation.

Estimates have been made that the $30 billion dollar fix will yield at least $1 billion in corrupt takings to the predators the government has, helpfully, exempted from regulation.

Ten years from now there will be enquiries into how that happened. A few scapegoats will go to jail. Behind the scenes there will be much greasing of palms.

And then it will all happen again.

Charter schools and private prisons - both of which carefully select their entrants - are becoming the fashion here.

As they did in New Orleans after Katrina.

Why are NZ sheep dogs so happy?

One might even call them gay.

In the nicest of possible ways.

Your veges cost more and bills are becoming a headache, austerity is a global buzzword and we're all being urged to tighten our belts. The Sunday Star-Times toured the country to investigate the reality behind the middle-class squeeze.

US Vice-President Joe Biden called it the "catastrophe" of the American middle class. The suburban dream was over: the 2000s were, statistically, the worst-ever decade for the American middle.

They saw their income drop (by 7.1 per cent) and their numbers shrink (from 61 per cent to 51 per cent of the American population). It was a crisis that led to a presidential election where both candidates fought openly to win that middle-class vote.

It's indisputable, say economists, that the American middle class is doing it tough.

So with a recession, spiralling inner-city house prices and a rising cost of living, is the Kiwi middle-class also feeling the squeeze? You might think so, but some economists reckon the numbers tell us we've never had it so good.
"They don't know how lucky they are," declares analyst Matthew Nolan of Wellington's Infometrics.

Jean-Pierre Du Raad, chief executive of the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research, agrees. The middle-class squeeze is "a bit of an urban myth", he says.
So there you have it. It's just the Yank middle-class that's disappearing.

    In NZ, they're cruising.

I am happy to report New Zealand has nothing in particular to be gay about at the moment.

This will hearten our American friends.

Nice guy this. And one of most ever successful players in the best sporting team the planet has ever seen.

New Zealand can be proud of its many inspirational sports stars, especially All Black great, Richie McCaw.
When you go over Richie McCaw's stats you will be shocked. Over 100 games for the All Blacks, winning close to 90 per cent of them. He has won IRB (International Rugby Board) Player of the Year three times. He has been New Zealand Player of the Year four times. He has won numerous Super Rugby titles, Bledisloe Cups, Tri-Nations and now the World Cup as captain. His resume is unbelievable.
And he doesn't spout banal rubbish when he's interviewed. Like so many rugby players, he's a university graduate.

At the risk of talking only to myself, our home owners are especially happy. We have a housing boom. NZ is one of the most expensive places on the planet in which to buy a house. Which also explains why we have such a high level of personal debt.

Now, we had such a boom pre-2007. Then we had a bit of a bust just before the Yanks compounded our problems with their GFC.

The boom is driven by rich immigrants from Asia. We let them in cos they're rich. But all they seem to do is stuff our housing market by paying silly prices for property.

It's the sort of problem the Yanks would love to have.
