The Lions of Rojava are western volunteers to fight with the Kurds against the Islamic State. John Robert Gallagher was a Canadian volunteer who died in combat against the Islamic State on 4 November 2015. There are several pictures at the link to include his return home.

Every Canadian will be repatriated along the highway of heroes. It's a tradition started during the war in Afghanistan to show respect for the fallen. It's a good tradition that we have had to unfortunately use too many times.

At least this Canadian fought and died for a noble cause. A rarity these days.
