does anyone recall the country getting their undies in a bunch when Ella Fitzgerald, or Placido Domingo, or Vladimir Horowitz, or Aretha Franklin, or B.B. King, or Tennessee Ernie Ford were presented with this same medal?

No, not really. Okay, I made a snarky comment about Sweet Baby James, but seriously, if the President (or whatever committee actually makes the selection) feels that his or anyone else's "cultural contribution" warrants the award, that's cool. Streisand's selection is getting flak from Conservatives because of her outspoken Liberal views, I would guess, and to be honest - President Obama could be putting the medal on Christ himself and a lot of people would complain. It's the closest thing America has to being knighted, I suppose, and the Brits have been putting that on actors and singers for quite some time now.

The Medal of Freedom is largely meaningless, but whatever. Give it to whoever you want.
"Those who produce should have, but we know that those who produce the most — that is, those who work hardest, and at the most difficult and most menial tasks, have the least."
    - Eugene V. Debs (1855-1926), five-time Socialist Party candidate for U.S. President
