There are essentially two (diametrically opposed) views of America. They are as follows:
View #1: American Exceptionalism. This is the view that America is the one (and only) truly indispensable country--the one nation on which the rest of the free world ultimately depends.
View #2: This is the view (held principally by the left) that America is more bad than it is good. Sure, it has done some positive things in the world--even if only by accident--but its global "footprint" has been much more negative than it has been positive.
It is very difficult--no, impossible--to just split the difference between these two opposing views. Either America is basically very good, with a few flaws; or it is basically very bad, with a few positive points.
