Long-awaited 'Furious' report places blame on ATF, Justice

Dozens of senior-level U.S. government officials turned a blind eye to public safety as they pursued an ill-conceived and poorly managed investigation into gun trafficking in Mexico, according to a long-awaited inspector general's report on Operation Fast and Furious.
Portions of the Justice Department IG report, which has not been made public, were obtained exclusively by Fox News Channel.
The report cites a failure in leadership and a lack of accountability and oversight up and down the chain of command at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Justice Department itself and other offices. It says many senior executives knew the U.S. was helping traffic guns to Mexico that killed people but did nothing to stop it.

The buck stops at the top. Fire Holder and his boss Obama in November. Justice must be done. We cannot let this type of reckless corruption continue.

I did not expect this internal report to get to the nitty gritty truth. So far, it would appear that they did not.

The huge question is "Why ?". Why did they turn a blind eye ? The answer is assuredly that they deliberately chose to allow it, if not direct its continuation. All arrows point to Justice wanting American guns, originating in border gun shops, in Mexico.

This is preposterous. Holder should be impeached. You can bet Obama gave a wink-and-nod to covering it up at least.

The most often cited reason is that they wanted to use gun violence in Mexico as a pretext to attack gun sales in the US.

A more sinister reason might have been to arm one faction in the Mexican drug wars.

    I suspect the latter...

I doubt that Holder and Obama have the kind of sophistication necessary for the kind of long view needed for such an attack on the Bill of Rights. Nor do I believe they are that stupid that such a far fetched idea would work.

But then I have underestimated their stupidity before.

What is crucial here is that Holder lied to Congress and we have lost sight of what we learned in the Nixon era: who knew what and when did they know it.

Allowing that to stand can only lead to more, even bolder attempts at violating the constitution.....

We can't have four more years of that, else we will have something that makes Watergate look like some kids playing in a sandbox.

There's a pretty strong feeling down here that the U.S. and Mexican governments have been quietly favoring and helping the Sinaloa Cartel.

For what purpose? Mind you, I'm not questioning your assertion. Genuinely curious. Do they expect to reach a some kind of understanding with the victor?

The theory is that they figure that getting rid of the other cartels, particularly the Zetas, will leave the country with a much more manageable situation. With the last election, we already know that the focus is going to shift to the sidebar crime, such as public executions, kidnapping and extortion, and put less focus on interdicting drugs headed to the U.S.

Sinaloa has largely avoided the last two categories of crime and until Calderon's failed escalation of the drug war, they pretty much stayed off the radar. By contrast, the Zetas are basically a terrorist organization.

I'm not sure what else they can do since the US refuses to pull the carpet out from under the cartels (i.e. by legalizing at least marijuana and cocaine). Interesting strategy.

Except that we had Sec of State Hillary Clinton in Mexico City at the time giving a speech where she specifically blamed lax gun control in the US as being a supplier of weapons to the cartels. In no uncertain terms.

Go to the 45 second mark, and watch for about 15 seconds as the news bimbo quotes Hillary. Then jump to 1:45. Hillary, in her own words. 2009:

This was the goal of FF.
