The fact that some people think an "American" can have dual citizenship and some do not should be proof enough that no objective definition of "American" actually exists. It's nothing but an ephemeral construct that people attach various meanings to as and when they please. There was something approaching an "American" at the time of the revolution, but it soon dissolved in the churning cauldron of faction.
Power always thinks it has a great soul, and vast views, beyond the comprehension of the weak. And that it is doing God service when it is violating all His laws.

America is a land mass. I assume he means United States of America, the nation-state.

The wife and I have considered dual citizenship in Scotland, when they get their independence.

Swiss democracy is relatively liberal (in the classical sense). Their cantons have a great deal of influence on politics, and I like my politics local. Their national government also operates on a much smaller, much more intimate scale than the US government does, which is another thing I find advantageous. In other words, I'm more amenable to government when I'm materially involved in the process. And I love the idea of living in a country that has managed to avoid wars since the early 1800's. That means we can spend our money on internal matters like infrastructure, education, and defense.
