Could ugly fruit and vegetables help solve world hunger?

Could ugly fruit and vegetables help solve world hunger?

The idea: lots of food is tossed out, especially fruits and veggie, because people don't like they way they look. The article refers to them as ugly fruit and vegetables. This stuff certainly should be used to feed the poor.

About a third of all the food we produce each year is wasted - and more fruit and veg is thrown away than any other food group.

Our obsession with 'perfectly' sized produce is, according to many, one of the primary causes of this staggering level of waste.

Could ‘ugly’ fruit and veg help ensure everyone has enough to eat?
At the farmers markets that I go to I often buy the "ugly" fruit and veggies. Taste and nutrition is what matters.

Why don't they chop the ugly stuff and freeze it for soups and stews?

The machinery in many plants can't handle things like siamese carrots or super irregular shapes of any kind. The other thing is that the sellers don't want to undercut the price of their produce by making these "seconds" available. Now if they were in your own garden, you wouldn't care if your potatoes had faces or your turnips weren't round. It might take some financial incentive like a tax deduction for the ugly veggies to make their way to where they would do the most good.

Not sure what exactly "ugly" means. I won't select bruised or obviously aged produce. I've declined chilis many times because they're too soft and/or wrinkled, for example.
Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.

The article seems to use shape as the factor.

That is exactly what I do. We garden every year. All the tomatoes ripen at once so what isn't eaten is blanched, skins removed and frozen for our chili, stews, and soups. Same with the bell and sweet red peppers.

No if you just get out of other's countries, everything will be solved. Especially Africa is the World's richest area as underground and aboveground resources.

But they don't even seem to have electricity for millions of people....

This tends to apply most frequently to root vegetables, although others also qualify like crooked celery. The peeling machines in factories can't cope with odd shaped produce.

Ah, OK. I think I know what you mean. Some carrots, for example, look awful.
