    Locust swarms.

This is a big problem in many countries, especially the u.s.a. how do you cope with this or recover? they ruin whole crops, and, they give nothing back - seems like a problem that needs a solution!

So, the locusts descend on rye and eat a lot of them, decimating crops. if we want the locusts to stop getting there, they need to give off a smell that these insects do not like, as, the insects do not rely on sight or sound to find them, but rather scents in the air. and, we need it to be cheap, as, farmers starting out cannot afford the prices of most pesticides, nor can they afford to go without them.

Now, to get rid of the locusts, they should use 'radio waves' from a transmitter in the center of the field that gives off sounds at a pitch they can hear, and is a distress signal. locusts will never come to a distress signal, as they have the mentality in them they are the ones distresses, as they are herbivores, being cowards you could say, yes?

So, how do we build this machine?

This machine will be sending out waves in the air of 'static' where the signal is more 'funny' and 'scary' the closer they get. this must be set at a pitch that disrupts the fluid in their 'ear drum,' which could be any low loud sound, or, high pitched 'irritating' sound.

To make sure the farmers do not hear it, as it would be terrible for them, they should observe that the pitch should be at about 500 Hertz. this is under our sense of hearing, but they will hear it.

So, they will send out these decibels at the right speed and pitch to get the locusts 'attention.' these can be set to go from one hundred to eight hundred hertz, quickly, confusing the locusts.

    Locusts to 'sniff out explosives'
Mon, 04 Jul 2016 - Scientists are researching technology they hope will allow locusts to detect explosives using their sense of smell.
They say heat-generating "tattoos" will enable them to be guided into dangerous or remote areas via remote control Neural signals from the locust's brain will then be processed by an on-board low-power processing chip that will decode the information and send a wireless alert back to the authorities. And the result will appear on a simple LED: red for present, green for absent. Baranidharan Raman, associate professor of biomedical engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Science Washington University, has studied the way locusts smell for several years. And the Office of Naval Research in the US has now given him a $750,000 (£565,000) grant to continue his research.

A locust with a sensor on it's back to test for dangerous chemicals

Olfaction, better known as the ability to smell, is considered a primary sensory quality in insects whereas it is more of an aesthetic sense for humans, according to Prof Raman. But locusts have a similar sense of smell to humans in that they can identify a particular smell even when it is mixed in with other odours. Prof Raman said they had "robotic noses" that could be trained to pinpoint and recall a smell such as dangerous chemicals. He told the BBC: "It took only a few hundred milliseconds for the locust's brain to begin tracking a novel odour introduced in its surroundings. The locusts are processing chemical cues in an extremely rapid fashion. "Even the state-of-the-art miniaturised chemical-sensing devices have a handful of sensors. On the other hand, if you look at the insect antennae, where their chemical sensors are located, there are several hundreds of thousands of sensors and of a variety of types," he said.

Meanwhile, Srikanth Singamaneni, associate professor of materials science, who specialises in nanomaterials, will be creating a plasmonic "tattoo" made of a biocompatible silk that will be applied to the locusts' wings to generate mild heat and help steer them towards particular locations by remote control. The tattoos will also be able to collect samples of volatile organic compounds in their proximity for other testing methods. Prof Raman estimates the prototype will be ready for rigorous testing in a year and if successful the locusts could be ready in less than two years. He also believes this new sensor technology could help to detect medical conditions in humans that are currently diagnosed by smell.

Greek island declares emergency over locust swarms
May 19, 2017 -- The Greek island of Agios Efstratios declared a state of emergency on Friday due to an ongoing seasonal locust plague, officials said.
Much of the plant life in the Aegean Sea island, which is home to about 200 residents, has been devoured by the locust swarms. Stella Spanou, a local administrator, told BBC News that sheep have even starved due to the lack of foliage.

Students from Athens traveled to the island and sprayed diflubenzuron and spinosad pesticides in attempts to fight the swarms, but the problem continues. "It's difficult because of the landscape -- they have to go on foot," Spanou said. "The eco-friendly chemicals are working, they got good results but there are still many locusts because they couldn't spray everywhere."

The island, located about 20 miles from the island Lemnos, has one village where Spanou said the chemicals cannot be used. The locust swarms are not thought to be migratory. Greece's General Secretariat for Civil Protection declared the emergency Wednesday night at the request of the North Aegean Region due to the insect troubles.

The island's mayor, Maria Kakkali, said scientists have "studied and concrete proposals have been made to address" the locust problem -- specifically, spraying the entire island with an eco-friendly chemical, Greece's Ta Nea reported. The mayor said the emergency declaration will allow the problem to be solved more quickly by loosening up bureaucracy.
