Milwaukee Police Officer Killed in Shooting Identified
JULY 26, 2018 - Milwaukee Police Officer Michael Michalski was fatally shot by a wanted suspect Wednesday.

A Milwaukee police officer died following a shooting Wednesday night. The incident began when officers were looking for a man wanted on gun and drug violations at a residence at North 28th and West Wright streets in the city's Metcalfe Park neighborhood shortly after 5 p.m., according to WISN-TV.

Police Chief Alfonso Morales told reporters that when the officers encountered the suspect, he opened fire, wounding Officer Michael Michalski. The 52-year-old 17-year veteran of the force, who was a member of the Special Investigations Division, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.


A procession of officers escorted the fallen officer's body from Froedtert Hospital to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office. The suspect was taken into custody and the weapon was recovered. Michalski leaves behind a wife and 3 sons. Funeral arrangements are pending.

JULY 26, 2018 - Arizona Trooper Tyler Edenhofer was shot and killed by a suspect with a trooper's gun and another trooper was wounded Wednesday night.

A rookie Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper was shot and killed by a suspect with a trooper's gun Wednesday night. Troopers responded to several calls of a man throwing rocks at cars that were heading eastbound on Interstate 10 near Avondale Boulevard around 10 p.m., according to KNXV-TV. Trooper Dalin Dorris was the first person to arrive at the scene and made contact with the suspect and Troopers Sean Rodecap and Tyle Edenhofer arrived shortly after.

Arizona Trooper Tyler Edenhofer was shot and killed by a suspect with a trooper's gun and another trooper was wounded Wednesday night.

The troopers struggled with the suspect as two Goodyear police officers arrived at the scene to help take the suspect into custody. During the struggle, Arizona Department of Public Safety Colonel Frank Milstead said the suspect got control of a trooper's gun and fired at least two shots from the weapon. One of the shots hit Dorris in the shoulder while another shot struck Edenhofer, killing him. "I'm incredibly proud of the men and women who show up to do this job every day. They're brave enough to come out and face the unknown," Milstead told reporters Thursday morning.


Edenhofer graduated from the Academy in May and was an officer in training. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Fort Myers police officer dies a week after shot on duty
July 29,`18 -- A Florida police officer died Saturday, a week after he was shot while attempting to apprehend a suspect, the Fort Myers Police Department said Sunday.

"It is with a heavy heart that we inform our community that Ft. Myers Police Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller has passed away as a result of the injuries sustained on Saturday, July 21st. Please continue to pray for Officer Jobbers-Miller's family, friends and our entire FMPD Family," the department wrote on Twitter. Jobbers-Miller was in critical condition since last Saturday after he was shot in the head while pursuing Wisner Desmaret, a suspect in a reported theft, the Fort Myers News-Press reported. Jobbers-Mille, 29,r had been serving with the Fort Myers Police Department since September 2015 and previously worked as a volunteer firefighter for Fire Co. 2 in Wayne, N.J.

Fort Myers Police Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller died on Saturday, a week after he was shot in the head while pursuing a suspect.

"When Adam joined in 2009, it was an honor being his chief and to watch him grow into such a devoted, dedicated firefighter," Fire Co. 2 Chief John Gabriel said during a vigil at the firehouse. A GoFundMe campaign to assist Jobbers-Miller's family had gathered $65,182 as of Sunday afternoon and the police department shared a schedule of fundraisers launched by several local businesses. "It's a very low time right now for our city and for the Miller family," Fort Myers Mayor Randy Henderson said. "We need to stay intensely focused on the family and their support. This will serve as a reminder to us all -- first responders, law enforcement officers face these challenges every day. We love them and respect them and at this time we embrace all of them."


Florida Gov. Rick Scott also offered his condolences to Jobbers-Miller's family. "Our hearts are heavy to learn of the passing of Officer Jobbers-Miller," he said. "Police officers like Adam Jobbers-Miller put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe. My wife, Ann, and I are praying for his family and everyone in the entire Lee County law enforcement community this evening." Desmaret was also injured in the encounter and is being held in police custody at Lee Memorial Hospital, but has yet to be arrested. Before the shooting he had been facing eight felonies, including attempted first-degree murder.

July 15,`18 -- A police officer and a bystander were shot and killed in Massachusetts as authorities pursued a vandalism and erratic driving suspect Sunday.

Authorities said Michael Chesna, 42, was fatally shot while attempting to arrest a suspect, identified as 20-year-old Emanuel Lopes around 7:30 a.m. Chesna was pursing Lopes with his gun drawn when Lopes struck him with a rock, took the officer's gun and shot him multiple times, according to authorities. Chesna was taken to South Shore Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Additional officers continued to pursue Lopes through the neighborhood as he fired Chesna's gun again and killed an elderly woman in her home.


Officers eventually shot Lopes in the leg and he is expected to survive. He will be arraigned Monday on two counts of murder. Also Sunday, police in Missouri shot and killed a man suspected of shooting three police officers and was a person of interest in the death of a University of Missouri-Kansas City student. Two of the officers were shot while working undercover to search for the murder suspect at the Sky-Vu Motel at 12:15 p.m., Kansas City police spokesman Sgt. Jacob Becchina said. Both officers were rushed to a hospital with non-ife-threatening injuries.


The shooting suspect fled the area with another person, who was found with the vehicle shortly afterward and arrested. Officers were then called to the area of 30th and Topping Avenue where they exchanged gunfire with the suspect. The suspect was killed and a third officer was injured by gunfire and taken to a hospital after the exchange. The officer's condition wasn't immediately known.

AUG. 9, 2018 - Flanked by dozens who lost loved ones in the line of duty, NYPD Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch called on the state to revise parole guidelines so those convicted of killing officers are no longer eligible to leave prison.

PBA president Pat Lynch said Tuesday that the current framework used by the parole board does not put as much weight on what crime an applicant committed, which the PBA argues will provide those convicted of killing on-duty officers a better shot at making parole. Lynch said prisons currently house 59 convicted cop killers who were sentenced when life without parole and the death penalty were not options for judges, which means they may one day be eligible for parole. Lynch highlighted the case of Salvatore DeSarno, who was convicted of killing Officer Cecil Sledge in 1980, and will be up for parole next month. The union leader said it was appalling that DeSarno could be released into the public. “The parole guidelines must be codified to prevent this from happening,” he said.

Sledge’s widow, Linda Sledge, held back tears as she pleaded for the parole board not to release DeSarno, who was convicted of shooting Sledge during a traffic stop and driving off while dragging Sledge’s body. She said that DeSarno was on parole when he was pulled over on Jan. 28, 1980. “It is difficult for me to even imagine how any right thinking person could consider for a second letting Sal DeSarno back onto our streets,” Linda Sledge said. A spokesman for the state Department of Corrections said the parole board considers several factors before making their decisions, including the severity of the crime and statements from victims’ families. The union claims the department needs Gov. Andrew Cuomo to authorize changes to its policies. “Where is your humanity?” Lynch said, while noting Cuomo has not taken steps to change the parole process.


Tyrone Stevens, a spokesman for the governor’s office, said a convicted person’s prison term cannot be changed after they are sentenced. “The governor and the legislature were responsible for reforms in 2011 that strengthened New York’s parole system, and further, the governor proposed determinate sentencing two years ago but that effort was rejected by the legislature,” he said in a statement. Besides pushing for a new parole board framework, Lynch said the PBA plans to legally challenge the parole board’s decision to grant parole in April to Herman Bell, who served 40 years in prison for killing two officers in Harlem.

Louisiana Sheriff's K-9 Fatally Shot During Pursuit
AUG. 20, 2018 - A Lincoln Parish Sheriff's K-9 Boco was fatally shot while pursing a suspect over the weekend.

Deputies responded to a call of a suspicious person at a residence on Chandler Road at approximately 7:30 p.m. Friday when the incident occurred, according to a news release. A short time later, deputies arrived on the scene and encountered Vincent Roberson who was wanted for attempted second-degree murder in Monroe for shooting his girlfriend.

K-9 Boco

As deputies approached Roberson, he fled into the woods behind the residence and K-9 Boco, was deployed. Moments later deputies heard a volley of gunfire and were unable to locate Boco. Law enforcement personnel from multiple agencies continued their search of Roberson until around 2 a.m. when he was taken into custody. At approximately 3:45 a.m. Saturday morning, deputies were able to locate Boco and found him deceased at the scene.


"Boco died heroically helping to apprehend a suspect in order to keep our community safe.We would sincerely like to commend all of the agencies who were involved in this incident, which include the Louisiana State Police, Monroe Police Department, Ruston Police Dept., Ruston Fire Dept, Louisiana State Fire Marshall’s Office, and Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office Reserve Unit. We appreciate the efforts of all personnel involved in this unfortunate event," the department wrote in a statement.

AUGUST 13, 2018 - Clayton County Police K-9 Oldin defended himself while being stabbed and was able to bite suspected murderer Randy Young in return, aiding in his apprehension Sunday morning.

A Clayton County, Georgia Police K-9 was stabbed while attempting to apprehend a murder suspect Sunday morning. Officers responded to an apartment complex located on Garden Walk Boulevard around 11 a.m. where a man shot a woman several times in the face, killing her, according to a Clayton County Sheriff's Office news release.


The shooting occurred in front of the woman’s step-father, and the man was able identify the shooter as Randy Young. The step-father gave officers the direction of flight for the man who was on foot and still armed. Sheriff Victor Hill contacted the commander of the Fugitive Squad and had him activate the entire unit for the manhunt. Hill and Clayton County Police Chief Kevin Roberts coordinated air support and K-9s for the ground to assist officers and deputies in the manhunt.

CLAYTON COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT K-9 Oldin

Officers and deputies tracked Young on foot to the wooded area behind the H-Mart located on Highway 85 in Riverdale. They then set up a tight perimeter to prevent Young from escaping out of the wood line. Shortly after officers and deputies entered the wood line, K-9 Oldin spotted Young and while apprehending him was stabbed twice in the head with a knife by Young.


Oldin defended himself while being stabbed and was able to bite Young in return, aiding in his apprehension. Young had a gun in his waistband at the time of his arrest. Oldin was rushed to the closest animal hospital being escorted by police and is expected to survive his wounds.

AUGUST 22, 2018 - Charges won't be filed in the Feb. 5 shootout in which El Paso County Sheriff's Deputy Micah Flick and suspected car thief Manuel Zetina were killed and bystander Thomas Villanueva was partially paralyzed.

Charges won't be filed in the Feb. 5 shootout in which El Paso County sheriff's Deputy Micah Flick and suspected car thief Manuel Zetina were killed and bystander Thomas Villanueva was partially paralyzed, the 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday. The DA's Office said the officers "acted reasonably" when they shot Zetina after he unleashed a hail of bullets, wounding four officers and Villanueva, all "before any member of law enforcement fired their weapons." The report recounts for the first time the harrowing last moments of Flick's life and what District Attorney Dan May called the "horrible tragedy that struck our community." The DA's report gives this account:


The Beat Auto Theft Through Law Enforcement task force, including Colorado Springs police, county sheriff's deputies and the Colorado State Patrol, were tracking a stolen green Saturn about 8 a.m. Feb. 5. They hadn't yet identified Zetina, 19, as the driver, but they followed him as he drove across the city, stopping a few times to retrieve items from the trunk or spray-paint the car blue. His last stop would be the Murray Hill Apartments, 4225 Galley Road, where his family lives. Zetina sat in the parking lot, smoking what later was determined to be meth, and making calls. Then he went into an apartment. When he walked out and headed toward the stolen car, officers decided to arrest him, noticing at the last minute that Zetina's right hand was in his pocket, apparently clasping an object.

Deputy Micah Flick

Deputies Scott Stone and Flick approached Zetina as he walked toward them. Stone grabbed Zetina in a "bear hug" and yelled "police." Zetina had his gun in hand and started firing, striking Stone in the left hip. Task force members saw Flick struggling with Zetina. Some think they were fighting over a gun. Seconds later, Flick was "motionless on the ground." The investigation later would reveal he'd been shot once, in the throat. With two officers down, Zetina "began to spray the parking lot with gunfire, moving in a circle as he fired," striking police Detective Marcus Yanez in the groin and Villanueva in the spine. Bullets also struck a nearby apartment building, and sheriff's Sgt. Jacob Abendschan was hit by shrapnel.


Three officers returned fire, striking Zetina in the torso and back and grazing his left arm. When he fell, he still had "the gun in his hand and his finger on the trigger." The entire event lasted about 10 seconds, May said. The bullet that punctured Flick's throat was never found, May said, but the DA's Office determined that Zetina shot him because autopsy records indicated Flick was hit at close range, and because no other officers had fired their weapons by then. Zetina was using "9mm full-metal jacket rounds" designed to go "through and through," which is why some of the rounds were not recovered, May said. Zetina's gun held nine rounds, but the report didn't say how many were fired. Only six shell casings were recovered. The DA's investigation indicated Zetina knew he was attacking law enforcement even before Stone yelled "police."

A dragnet is underway for four suspects in a home-invasion robbery in Cherry Hills Village in which at least one of the suspects shot and injured a police officer in an exchange of gunfire late Monday night and then fled, authorities say. The officer, Corey Sack, was shot twice, once in each leg, following a 10:50 p.m. emergency call from a home near Sedgwick Drive and Hampden Avenue, said Cherry Hills Village police Chief Michelle Tovrea. The injuries are not considered life-threatening. “He is in surgery right now,” Tovrea said at 8:30 a.m.

Police received a 911 call from an address on Sedgwick Drive, but the caller did not speak before the phone was disconnected, Tovrea said. Sack and other police officers responded to the call and found the front door open. When Sack entered the home in the affluent neighborhood, at least one of the suspects opened fire. Sack returned fire. It’s not clear whether any of the suspects were struck by gunfire. After being shot in both legs, Sack managed to get to the home’s front porch as two suspects who entered the home fled out a back door and ran away in a westerly direction, Tovrea said. Witnesses said two other suspects remained outside the house during the home-invasion robbery, Tovrea said.


All of the suspects were dressed in black clothing including black hoodies, Tovrea said. “I don’t know how they fled the area. They were on foot,” she said. Police recovered a stolen vehicle nearby that Tovrea says is being treated as part of the investigation. Dozens of police officers and deputies from across the Denver metro area joined the search, including three different SWAT teams, Tovrea said. Nearby residents received automatic phone messages instructing them to shelter in place. “We’re still talking to witnesses,” Tovrea said. Sack has been a police officer in Cherry Hills Village for seven years. Before that he was a deputy at the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office. Check back for updates on this breaking news story.
