Coal company- aggressive regulations 1,200 layoffs

Coal company facing aggressive regulations announces 1,200 layoffs

Coal company Alpha Natural Resources announced Tuesday it would be laying off 1,200 workers and closing eight coal mines to face two new challenges: cheap natural gas and “a regulatory environment that’s aggressively aimed at constraining the use of coal.” The Associated Press reports that the company is cutting production by 16 million tons and 1,200 jobs nationwide, with 400 layoffs occurring immediately by closing coal mines in Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.Four mines will be closed in West Virginia, another three will be closed in Virginia and one in Pennsylvania. All the mines are non-union operations, according to the AP.
In total, nearly one-tenth of the company’s 13,000-person workforce will be laid off.

“President Obama’s War on Coal means fewer jobs and higher energy costs for Americans. Coal is a critical component to our nation’s energy future, and I am proud to support this legislation that will help preserve this vital energy source for future generations,” said Kansas Republican Rep. Mike Pompeo, one of the leading critics of President Obama’s coal policies, talking about the Stop the War on Coal Act. The Daily Caller reported in July that 175 coal-fired generators, or 8.5 percent of the total coal-fired capacity in the United States, were expected to be retired in 2012 and Alpha’s announcement comes on the heels of of a rough summer for the coal industry.

We are sitting on more energy in coal than he entire world has in oil and instead of working on clean ways to use it peerless leader want to destroy the coal industry.

Who thinks if Ubama gets reelected that cap n' trade will become a reality???

Coal companies should face aggressive regulations, however I doubt the potency of that statement.

    They're a $#@!ing joke, completely unregulated.

No, I want responsible extraction of natural resources.

What we have now is a complete disregard of mine safety, miners dying in China-like working conditions and a vast pollution of surrounding land.

There is no regulatory agency with teeth to regulate the coal industry, it's a virtual free-for-all. This is an area where I would strongly support a complete unionization of the industry, and I'm pretty staunchly anti-union.

Perhaps if you knew anything about the industry, you might understand that it's more than just another silly anti-ubama thread slam.

President Obama is not interested in jobs. He is seeing 1,200 more people on food stamps and welfare.

It's a hard and dangerous job. Many don't live long lives because of lung disease. Regulations are ignored for the mighty dollar. Many make a living doing this and I don't want them shut down but they do need to be more regulated to protect the workers.

    29 fatalities..That's terrible.

40,000 people are killed in car crashes every year. There ought to be a LAW!
We should probably have a government agent ride in each and every vehicle to "regulate" them and make sure they're being handled correctly.

116 fishermen per 100,000 die every year..We obviously need a Bureau of Fishing Safety to "regulate" them.

92 loggers per 100,000 die every year...We need more REGULATIONS in logging!

41 farmers are killed per 100,000 every year. LAWS!..REGULATIONS! BUREAUCRACY!..that will solve the problem.

32 roofers are killed per 100,000 every year. We need a government agent on every roof to monitor and "regulate" them. Perhaps a law forbidding houses with roofs..they're just too dangerous to build and maintain....
