I've decided to finally read the third book in Cormac McCarthy's Border Trilogy, 'Cities of the Plain'. I guess you could say I was saving it because I didn't want to see it end. So now I'm re-reading, for the nth time, the first book, 'All the Pretty Horses' - probably still my favorite novel, all time - which I'll follow with 'The Crossing', and then the concluding volume.

McCarthy's hatred of commas is very evident, and some of his run-on sentences are epic - but when you write like he does, you can thumb your nose at grammatical niceties.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.” - Robert E. Howard

"Only a rank degenerate would drive 1,500 miles across Texas and not eat a chicken fried steak." - Larry McMurtry

I guess. I heard the author discuss it on late night talk radio with Ian Punnett. It sounded very interesting. I think it was Coast to Coast AM, which is normally a dog, but Punnett is a very good interviewer.

Currently reading "Sailing From Behind The Curve" by Dave Bacon. Its the story of Mr. Bacon sailing from San Francisco to Mexico in a 22 foot Bear Class sailboat. Its a relatively short book, about 180 pages of small type but its quite entertaining.

I like to read those sailing stories of people taking long journeys in small boats. Some are perilous, some rather mundane but all show the spirit of men who set out on the unknown just to prove they can. By the way, its not just men who do this. A very good book was "Finding Pax" by Kaci Cronkhite who traveled to Denmark to find the family who had originally commissioned the building of Pax, a 25 foot Spidsgatter built 70 years before.

I'm currently reading G-Man ~ by Stephen Hunter (the latest Bob Lee Swagger story). I'm loving the fact that he is jumping back and forth between 1934 gangsters and the present, I mean the opening chapter is about the take down of Bonnie and Clyde...and having recently eaten at a trattoria across the street from where the St. Valentines Day Massacre occurred, makes it extra juicy!

I keeping with my signature line, I am reading a book on how individuals made it through the Balkan Civil War.
It is in our time and not 1930's Germany.

Some people had butane containers and would trade a lighter refill for a can of food.
It turns out refillable butane lighters were extremely precious.
So was the ability to refill them.

They also said not one word of the problems were reflected in the media but those who worked in the black market new all about what was coming.
One guy who was in the secret police even had no idea.
You could not trust any media for accurate information.

One guy's first indication some violence might be afoot was when a tank rolled down the street he lived.
When it is not allowed to be questioned, it is not science, it is PROPAGANDA
