Agree. Base line for me is agnosticism, shared even with some theists. Then my choosing not to believe has entailments in trying to find morality and dignity on a logical or reasonable basis rather than any basis in faith or theology, if that makes sense. It's not just I lack faith, period.

It makes perfect sense. We've gone toe to toe on the matter many times and, while I obviously doubt your potential for success, I very much respect that about you. You are the only atheist I have encountered on forums that takes that task seriously. The rest have been content to assume their inherited Christian perspective on morality, human dignity etc. while mocking their ancestral faith at the same time.

I can't speak for Appignanibut will say that because the religious are 85% or so and the declared atheists maybe 1%, we're outcasts. While the Constitution, for example, says no religious tests, there have been no atheist presidents and only a handful in Congress.

I'm not complaining, mind you.

That's just it though. How many declared not baseball fans are there? Is the atheist really just like the guy who doesn't like baseball? Or does he have a lot more to say on the subject of baseball? Honestly, it seems obvious to everyone but "declared" atheists themselves. I don't think your average theist cares all that much about people who simply lack belief. It's the people who need to tell us about it day after day that raise an eyebrow.

If you dont believe in god, ok thats fine. Why screw up a tradition that the kids enjoy the most that does not hurt you in any way shape or form. Thats my only problem with atheists

Even as an atheist I agree with you especially about traditions and such. And the more utilitarian value of religion being part of the natural social institution standing between society and the state.

I've lost a couple of jobs where I inadvertently let my atheism peek out of its hiding place at lunches or after-work drinks. Couple of weeks later (in one case, after a glowing review), I got the boot. If you're a Christian, think proclaiming yourself such in Iran. Yeah, that's how it feels.

Christians are not persecuted in Murica. Atheists are.
