The cold war, and the answer to it brought the freeing of the Russian people and the peoples of many countries from the Communist fist.
The Cold War was more than not cuddling up to the ideology that had enslaved many countries, but to force them into bankruptcy through arms expenditure among other things.

The Soviets were an existential threat to the US and the West. The Middle East is not. It is a useless backwater now that we frack.

Typical self-centered view. The Arabs are still making billions off cheaply produced oil and financing migrant sleeper-cell invasions with that loot. It doesn't matter if we don't buy their oil anymore; they are still in a position to destroy us. Petrocratic agitation and propaganda agents are buying the ideas you let influence you.
On the outside, trickling down on the Insiders

We won't live free until the Democrats, and their voters, live in fear.

I was arguing against invasion and occupation. We can handle the camel jockeys in other cheaper ways.

OK, tell me about all the times that the cold war posed a real war threat. The only one I know of was a mistake. The cold war was largely super powers experimenting with boggiemen to gain control. For example hiding under wooden desk won't save a school child in a direct nuclear attack. But it will condition said school child to be a good little subject

    You are playing armchair quarterback.

We didn't have all knowledge of them, nor they us. In the beginning of the Cold War there was real fear in the West that capitalism was over and communism would win. You can laugh at them- but it would be incorrect to discount the people living life them without what you know today.

Agreed you say that in hindsight.

If a tornado was heading right at you would you sit in your swing saying that there is nothing to worry about. And think that reaction was justified when the tornado misses you by a quarter mile?

Without being armed with hindsight, I doubt that any nation has ever done everything right during any period of history on earth.

Where do we get our hindsight from in time for it to matter?

Dontread must know. He should make himself available to advise world leaders.
