Top retailers that are closing stores in 2016
Retailers continue to face a challenging environment in 2016, with Macy's becoming only the latest top name to announce a wave of store closings this year.
Macy's (M) said it will close 100 of its 675 full-line locations amid falling profitability. The department-store chain is only one in a list that ranges widely from specialty apparel to sporting goods.

Among the top retailers closing stores in 2016 so far:
Sports Authority: 460 stores shutting down
The struggling sporting goods store chain is in the process of closing all of its 460 stores. The retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March and originally planned to close about 140 stores, but is now completely folding after attempting to restructure debt. No offers were made at an auction from buyers willing to keep any stores open.
Dick's Sporting Goods bought Sports Authority's intellectual property and some leases for $15 million.
Sports Authority launched a massive going-out of business sale that is expected to be completed this month, according to documents. Sports Authority cited online competition as a key factor in its demise.

Walmart: Closing 269 stores, including 154 U.S. locations
The world's largest retailer said in January that it was closing 269 stores around the world as it refocuses on its supercenters and e-commerce business. The closures include 154 U.S. locations and all of its Express format stores that are smaller and designed to compete against so called dollar stores.
The closures were decided based on financial performance and how well the locations fit with Walmart's broader strategy, the company said. Walmart has nearly 11,600 stores worldwide and plans to open more than 300 stores in the fiscal year.
Walmart (WMT) is attempting to aggressively grow its e-commerce business and compete with Amazon.com. The retailer announced this week that is was buying thee-commerce start-up Jet.com for $3 billion.
