Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.

If I recall I was at a cheap hotel on the edge of town, likely on that road.

By day 3 I definitely agree. A Confederate victory was still a real possibility even on day 2 because of foolish Union moves. For example, the advance into "the Wheatfield" was a pointless extension of the Union position and difficult to defend.

Yes that is true. The Union could have lost that battle, rather than the South win it if you know what I mean. I would have fallen back to defensible terrain.

I was too the first time I went. Some Indian run joint. We might be thinking of tjhe same place, actually. Freight tracks across the street? Nice place in terms of cleanliness and price but we were too far away from town at night.

Perhaps. A graveyard was next door to it. The room was clean, but the mattress was a decade past its useful life. Killed my back.

I know exactly what you mean. Very true. On day 2 the position should have been unassailable but wasn't because of some harebrained schemes.

I will amend what I said: Lee could have squared off and started the artillery duel will probing the flanks. The charge up the middle into effect artillery fire was insane.

    1793Capitol cornerstone is laid

In a Masonic ritual, Washington lays the capitol cornerstone.

On this day in 1793, George Washington lays the cornerstone to the United States Capitol building, the home of the legislative branch of American government. The building would take nearly a century to complete, as architects came and went, the British set fire to it and it was called into use during the Civil War. Today, the Capitol building, with its famous cast-iron dome and important collection of American art, is part of the Capitol Complex, which includes six Congressional office buildings and three Library of Congress buildings, all developed in the 19th and 20th centuries.
