Steven Hawking- we must find advanced aliens before they find us

Steven Hawking- we must find advanced aliens before they find us

Certainly a good idea. There are two schools of thought on this: a species advanced enough for interstellar travel would be sufficiently morally advanced to not have destroyed itself prior to interstellar travel; or maybe not.

Hawkings is being careful and in the maybe not camp.

Stephen Hawking is again warning about announcing our presence to any alien civilizations that might be out there, especially those that could be more technologically advanced.

In his new half-hour program "Stephen Hawking's Favorite Places" on science-themed subscription service CuriosityStream, the world's most famous theoretical physicist flies by the potentially habitable exoplanet Gliese 832c in a CGI spaceship as part of his hypothetical dream itinerary for a tour of the universe.

The super-Earth is only 16 light-years away and just the sort of world the Hawking-supported Breakthrough: Listen initiative hopes to scan for signs of alien signals using our most sensitive radio telescopes.

They could be "sufficiently morally advanced" and then run into us and very rapidly decide that we are not sufficiently morally advanced enough to continue existing. If any of the stories about Roswell are true we might have already shown them how morally advanced we are.

I kind of think maybe we try to make "aliens" over in our image. Hostile species with advanced equipment waging war against us with fleets of spaceships they send maybe hundreds of light years to get to us. If our destruction was their goal they could divert a few asteroids into us or they could lace the atmosphere with a virus that wipes out humans or use some weapon so advanced we can't even imagine it. I would assume they would want our planet and it would be us they needed to remove without destroying the planet. If they are scientifically advanced their idea of morality might actually be similar to ours. We view less advanced life on our own planet as property to be used as we wish or even eradicated if it suits our needs. We do this without giving it a second thought. They might even take us doing something similar to what our "smarter" people in the know do to us. Infiltrate our institutions and slowly consolidate power into fewer and fewer hands. A psychological war fought on all fronts and in every aspect of our lives. Build that all powerful one world government and take total control like in Orwell's 1984. Advanced aliens could probably accomplish this with just a small team by influencing the right people. If their goal was to have our planet once they accomplish the consolidation of power they could use us to dismantle all traces of ourselves and reduce our population to zero. Then the fleets of transports would arrive to take possession of and repopulate the planet with their "people."

Hawking's might be right and just like we need to advance ourselves to get off planet and protect ourselves against asteroids and comets and even an expanding sun, we need to make sure that we can defend ourselves. I hope our attitude would be one of friendship with all but we also need to realize that not everyone is friendly and be ready for it.

That's probably what the aboriginal chief "Ain't gonna happen" said in 1490.

I think the test of moral superiority so far as species survival goes is the ability to transition from a Type I civilization to a Type II civilization without destroying itself. That could be from war or destruction of the environment.

I think we could be in the first step of that transition right now. Sure, we still have the same problems as always but we now have enough knowledge to overcome the superstitions and paranoia of the past. I think with the information age we are in and the ability to find out what has happened and what is happening people will learn we are one together and not many and separated. The remnants of the old orders with the kings and princes and the elite that they have morphed into today will pass and they don't like it. They are the ones who still want to control the power and they are the ones who pit us against each other. If people wake up to it we will have that transition. If they don't there will probably be another 1000 years of the dark ages but the candle of light and knowledge has been lit and it will never be completely extinguished.

    Cool

Uncle Ferd wonderin' if dey got womens in dat parallel universe?...

Stephen Hawking's last paper predicts parallel universes
March 19, 2018 -- Physicist Stephen Hawking worked up to his death last week and submitted a paper on the end of the universe, his co-author said.
Hawking's scientific paper "A Smooth Exit from Eternal Inflation," written with Thomas Hertog of Belgium's Leuven University, was revised from a July 2017 draft and submitted on March 4. Hawking died Wednesday at age 76.

The paper is archived by Cornell University's Arxiv.org and is under scholarly review. It offers a mathematical procedure for someday testing the theory of the existence of an infinite number of universes, known as the Multiverse Theory. It suggests that the universe we know will end when the stars run out of energy. It also theorizes that alternate universes could be found using probes on spacecraft.

Physicist Stephen Hawking's last scientific paper, submitted on March 4, predicts the end of the universe and the existence of parallel universes, co-author Thomas Hertog said.

Hertog said Sunday that the theory, if provable, could have led to a Nobel Prize for Hawking. The world's highest-profile physicist until his death, the wheelchair-bound Hawking appeared as himself on the television programs Star Trek, The Simpsons and the Big Bang Theory.

"This was Stephen: to boldly go where Star Trek fears to tread," Hertog told the British newspaper Sunday Times. "He has often been nominated for the Nobel and should have won it. Now he never can." The Nobel Prize is awarded only to living recipients.

Which goes to the basic fear people have of space aliens: That they'll do to us what we did to Native Americans and Africans.

Like Hawking, I fully support searching the skies for signs of other civilizations, but since we've been broadcasting our presence for over 100 years, it's unlikely we can hide ourselves from anyone looking for us.

That said, since we've been looking for signs of extraterrestrial civilizations for over 50 years with negative results, the odds of anyone stopping by is slim to none.
