    E. coli Non-Toxigenic-something to think about

    Escherichia coli or E. coli
is a gram negative organism that comes in a variety of strains.

While E. coli {non toxigenic} may be present in Fresh milk and cause little concern~

When found in processed milk is a cause for great concern. The reason is the presents in processed milk by products, is inoculation, contamination!

    E. coli present
on a pasteurized milk or cheese is a sure sign that insanitary
conditions have occurred, whether it be poor sanitation of
machinery or the unwashed hands of an employee. So, the
presence of E. coli can be used as an indicator that there is an
increased probability of pathogenic bacteria in that product.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Most people associate the term
    E. coli with the E. coli O157:H7 strain which is infectious and
known for causing severe illnesses, but the vast majority of E. coli
    strains are actually harmless.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Given that non-toxigenic
    E. coli
is not infectious many in the
dairy industry may be wondering why the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) has shown a great deal of concern
regarding non-toxigenic E. coli in cheese. The reason for this is
grounded in the biology of non-toxigenic E. coli and the fact
that the presence of a non-toxic strain serves as an indicator
for an increased probability of contamination from
    pathogenic bacteria as well.

E.coli outbreak kills two children in Hildale, Utah...

E.coli outbreak kills two children in Utah polygamous community
Tuesday 4th July, 2017 - A health spokeswoman said deaths from E.coli are pretty rare with an average of only one person a year dying from the illness in Utah
Utah health authorities were investigating Monday what triggered an E.coli outbreak in a mostly-polygamous community on the Utah-Arizona border after the bacteria killed two children and sickened four others. Early indications suggest the E.coli may be linked to contaminated food or exposure to animals — not the town of Hildale’s water supply, said David Heaton, spokesman for the Southwest Utah Public Health Department. He said it appears isolated to one neighbourhood.

Heaton said he can’t releases the names or ages of the deceased children, or say if they are related, due to privacy concerns. He said they died in the past two weeks after getting hemolytic uremic syndrome, also known as HUS, which causes kidney damage. E.coli can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches or other symptoms.

    Hildale, Utah

Utah Department of Health spokeswoman Jenny Johnson said deaths from E.coli are pretty rare with an average of only one person a year dying from the illness in Utah, a state of about 3 million people. There are 80 to 100 cases per year in Utah of a strain of E.coli that have a toxin called Shiga that makes people sick, Johnson said.

The four other people who came down with E.coli in Hildale are children and adults but Heaton didn’t have the exact breakdown. He declined to release their conditions but said they’ve all received medical care. The sister towns of Hildale, Utah and Colorado City, Arizona, are home to a polygamous group known as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It is a radical offshoot of mainstream Mormonism, which disavowed polygamy more than 100 years ago.
