It was to sell indulgences. If your dead family was in purgatory, you could give the Church money to get them up and into heaven. It was a big reason for the Protestant Reformation.

Purgatory is a stop over for sinners who've repented. Limbo was for the unborn and babies not yet Baptized. All would enter Heaven after the "Second Coming". My memory could be a little shaky, but I think this fairly describes my education in the Catholic Church. Mu uncle was a priest, so this was always fairly close to home in my family.
