Tens of Thousands of Pakistanis Demonstrate Against Taliban

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Tens of thousands rallied in Pakistan's largest city Sunday in support of a 14-year-old girl who was shot and critically wounded by the Taliban for promoting girls' education and criticizing the militant group.

The demonstration in the southern city of Karachi was by far the largest since Malala Yousufzai and two of her classmates were shot on Oct. 9 while returning home from school in Pakistan's northwest.

The attack horrified people inside and outside Pakistan and sparked hope among some that it would prompt the government to intensify its fight against the Taliban and their allies.

But protests against the shooting have been relatively small until now, usually attracting no more than a few hundred people. That response pales in comparison to the tens of thousands of people who held violent protests in Pakistan last month against a film produced in the United States that denigrated Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

Nice to see the Pakistanis taking a stand against this kind of violence. They're doing so at considerable risk to their safety IMO...people are afraid to speak out and I can understand that.

Certainly a good sign. A vote for modernity as opposed to savagery.

    We agree on something.

But why is Pakistan our "ally" since they created the Taliban to fight the evil Soviet Empire in Reaganistan? Reagan's idiotic support of the "freedom fighters" was arguable the stupidest geopolitical mistake in the second half of the 20th century,

No, that's really not arguable at all. It's kind of silly.
Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.

Oh I get it, another tea bagger who has to deny history.

Reagan supported the jihadists, who became the Taliban, who killed thousands of people including our troops and who protected Bin Laden (whom Obama killed).

Deal with reality for once, bagger.

Reagan's support of the mujahideen is a classic example of how "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" can come back to bite one on the ass. Just as the Russians used surrogates to kill Americans in Vietnam and burden the U.S. economy with war costs, the U.S. government used the mujahideen to kill Russians and weaken the Russian nation in the same way. It definitely led to the current situation. It is unfortunate that the Obama regime has bought into the same futile involvement with Afghan as history has shown that this country is unpacifiable and needs to be quarrantined and otherwise left alone.

However, despite the ignorant rant above, the fact is that there was a strategic reason for Reagan's support of the mujahideen and the policy succeeded in doing just what it was intended to do, make a major contribution to the collapse of the Soviet Empire.

I have to say that I had very low expectations of Barry which have proved out but I did expect him to really put a brake on the foreign military misadventurism that seems to be endemic to the U.S. government. Alas, he failed there as well.

Next time, genius, don't sleep through history.

    Oh God, this debunked nonsense.

No serious historian thinks Reagan didn't arm and support Bin Laden through his connection with other terrorists in Reaganistan. You actually think the terrorists Reagan supported were scrupulous about who they shared missiles and money with?

BWHAHAHHAHAH! No wonder teabaggers think the world is 6000 years old!

That is an interesting statement. Can you support it without relying on hind-sight?
