I have asked @donttread to actually do some reading. To understand that this country stood weak and vulnerable a mere 200 years ago. I ask him but to read a book called Undaunted Courage.

To understand who the...not superpowers...but empires' were at the time. England, Spain, France, Russia, Japan, China, even the Ottoman Empire. That the US was a fledgling. Weak military relatively speaking, we hadn't even explored the central north American Continent as of yet, didn't know what was on or in it. We had our Capital burnt to the ground by the English. We had to purchase the Louisiana Territory from the French who were concerned not with us, but with their enemy Great Britain.

Today....donttread lives the greatest standard of living known to mankind. We crossed the US in 1805........our Explorers wrecked with malaria, no idea even by then that it was carried from the mosquito. Fevers and intestinal diseases, superpowers on this planet that could stomp on we newbies in mere months, the newest Republic on the planet. And from all that.....we turned into a behemoth.

Again....I point to another book I just referred Peter to.......the Fleet at Flood Tide. The story of the United States Navy during WW2.......and it's production capacity and destructive force.......nearly 70 years ago. In slightly more than 100 years....this country became the worlds foremost superpower.....dwarfing all others. To donttread's point, he wasn't speaking to military force........but both books just cited will give him an idea of economic capacity. Human spirit and endurance. Our economic engines, why it was possible. Donttread all confused because this continent had resources, had water and farmland, he truly believes any country, any society of man could do the same.......f'n nonsense.

Read....donttread. I have asked and even pleaded for you not to come in here and act this naïve and wholesale uninformed....and you refuse to do so. You caterwaul in here and munch on about the US and we cannot sustain ourselves....it's just such drivel.

Don't argue with me.......send me your address. I'll send you the Ambrose book, on me....consider it a Christmas present from me to your mother, I've no yearning to allow her son to walk through his entire life without a f'n clue.

Anyway. The real question is :. If we are a "true super power" which apparently means we can meddle with everyone's business if we wish: Why do we need to wage war, go in debt, lose lives, kill people ,spy on our own, create terrorist and make ourselves vulnerable to price fluctuations and supply disruptions of a product we virtually cannot function without and which affects virtually all our industries, instead of just pumping it out of the ground and refining it here or developing alternatives? There must be one hell of an explaination for not having become energy independent one way or another by now.

Christ, check the ego at the door or you'll become another @Ransom.
The point is we make war , spy on our own people and endanger national security by going out of our way to NOT produce our own energy. Not very "super poweish" sounding is it?
Where did that term come from anyway, comic book kids who grew up to be war buffs?

In fact @Ransom we barely crack the top five in real standard of living . Behind Norway, the Swiss, and Austrailia. Not exactly interventionist countries are they. What happened to your "get rich by taking what we need" theory of interventionism?

    That's not how that works.

It's not energy that you lack, donttread. It's knowledge. And rather than Google or check out highest lifestyle, why not for a change check out a f'n book.
