I think extended prison sentences are also stupid. I prefer what worked for certain tribal groups for centuries... exile.

If you are going to have a death penalty, it should be carried out by the survivors of the victim. It is not a deterrent, It is an act of vengeance. Let the people who impacted carry out the death sentence, not some faceless state executioner.

I have for many years maintained that if the way we carried out executions in this country was to take the convicted, strap him into a chair, then give a survivor of the victim a Louisville Slugger and tell him to go ahead and get his revenge, the support for the death penalty would disappear almost overnight. It is easy to scream "Kill him" when you know someone else is going to do the killing for you. When you have to do your own killing, it is not quite so easy.

You are (again) sadly misinformed. It costs at least five times as much on average to execute someone than it does to keep them imprisoned for life.

You have a point but death by baseball bat would be a clear violation of the constitution.

"I didn't think I would start a race war or anything like that.

A race war would be pretty terrible," Roof said, adding that he would want to reinstate segregation or "something like that," saying segregation wasn't bad.

Asked how long he had thought this, Roof said, "The first thing that woke me up would be the Trayvon Martin case"

Imagine that, all the race baiting and race cards foisted on the public during the whole Zimmerman episode forced a nut case over the edge. Sad.

Well that was a reach - but a fine attempt at a semblance of logic nonetheless. ;-)

You are talking about "cruel and unusual punishment"?

So, what form of KILLING someone who doesn't want to die is NOT "cruel". Is sticking a needle in their arm and injecting poison into them somehow beneficial to them? Is there a pleasant way to kill a prisoner?

The whole reason for the bat is to make it as brutal and bloody and personal as possible. Like war, if it is a nice, neat, sanitized process, there is no reason not to do it. If you are going to beat someone to death with a bat, you have to really want them dead.

Do you honestly believe such framing of events has no impact on public opinion and individual states of mind? Bo, you were one of those guys who believed cops were running amok shootign hapless, unarmed $#@!es with reckless abandon.

It wasn't a stretch at all. The effect such "reportage" has has had is undeniably negative and totally irresponsible.
