Bull$#@!....Rock isn't dead, it's just taking a nap.
There are just so many genres of music now. There is a lot of great music out there now...including rock.

People have been saying Rock is dead forever...
Or Helix - remember them?
They're still playing in and around Hamilton ON I believe. I always wanted to take a drive up there to see them. They were one of my first rock albums I owned in high school. No Rest for the Wicked.

Ugh...my wife liked them. They get on my nerves.
Canadian bands that I like these days are Arcade Fire, Death From Above 1979, The Sheepdogs and Alexis on Fire is OK...
But Canada's biggest exports now aren't rock...they're Drake, Beiber, Shaun Desmond and other crap....
The problem is distribution. The internet crushed the existing model and the record companies. Now there is no filter between the consumer and the producer to weed out the shaky acts. It's risky to blindly buy product based on what you smoked in the parking lot before entering the store. There is no smooth coordination between promoters and distributors.
As a player I always had distribution, and I always had management. But I know my friends all wanted the system to die. I was ambivalent.
Now that it is gone lots of players would like to have it back.

I agree with that and also @Common Sense 's suggestion that genres now are broad and have blurred lines.
My point though is that there aren't going to be any superstar acts. We live in an IPod society. Pop-ups, instant information, lots of distractions. Who's hot is not hot a month later, the new "hot" is getting the attention.
Is that anything the industry or the acts did wrong? I don't think so, I think it's musical evolution.
And it sucks.
