Conservative Fox News host Bill O'Reilly believes that celebrities who won't perform at President-elect Donald Trump's inaugural celebration are threatening the American tradition of a peaceful transition between administrations.

"All Americans should respect the process," the "O'Reilly Factor" host said during his "Talking Points" segment on Tuesday.
"There should never be intimidation about attending or performing at an inauguration.


That is un-American."

"So even though there was bitterness over the Bush-[Al Gore] race, the nation came together for the inauguration," O'Reilly said.
"But now that cohesive spirit seems to have changed."


"The harsh truth is that there's reverse McCarthyism going on in the entertainment industry," O'Reilly said, referring to Senator Joseph McCarthy's witch hunt for Communists in the 1950s, which included the blacklisting of many in the entertainment industry whose politics differed from McCarthy's.

"Today it seems anti-Trump zealots may be doing the same thing," O'Reilly said.
"If you're a Trump supporter, then you're a bad person.
Some entertainers think their careers will be harmed by associating with the new Trump administration."

NEW YORK — President-elect Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday that the album sales of Jackie Evancho, the teenage classical singer, have "skyrocketed" since the announcement that she would perform at his inauguration.

Not exactly, according to sales figures.

According to Nielsen Music, which tracks album sales, Evancho sold 7,206 albums the week ending on Dec. 15 (she announced she would sing the national anthem at the Inauguration on Dec. 14).


The following week, which ended on Dec. 22, Evancho sold 13,788 albums, and the week after, ending on Dec. 29, the 16-year-old sold 11,096 albums.

While some of the credit may be due to the announcement about the performance at the inauguration, Evancho's sales could simply be a result of the holidays: She released a new album, "Someday at Christmas," on Oct. 28, and she has other holiday albums in her catalog.
And not surprisingly, holiday albums tend to sell particularly well during the holidays.

The singer's album sales also could have seen a boost thanks to her performance on NBC's "America's Got Talent: Holiday Spectacular," which aired on Dec. 19.

Her overall album sales, however, remain low.


The top-selling album for the weeks ending on Dec. 22 and Dec. 29 was a cappella group Pentatonix's "A Pentatonix Christmas," which sold 206,000 and 101,000 equivalent albums, respectively.

The comparison to McCarthyism is completely inapt and off the wall. That was the forces of government, led by Joseph McCarthy (and Trump's mentor in later years, Roy Cohn) attempting to get employers to blackball or fire anyone with Communist ties. This is a case where individual artists are exercising their right to refuse employment, whether as the result of personal ideological beliefs and standards - the majority - or as an acknowledgement that their fan base would not appreciate their appearing at that venue. This situation is about as far from being "McCarthyism" as it's possible to get.
