Bacon exploded in popularity once people learned they'd been conned by the USDA food pyramid. Who the hell wants to eat ground up and sugared corn when they could eat bacon? The govt has a lot to answer for in their war against saturated fats.

This guy proved pigs will eat you.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Pickton

Pickton mentioned killing prostitutes by handcuffing and strangling them, then bleeding and gutting them before feeding them to pigs.

As far as I'm aware, bacon has always been popular. I don't remember the USDA saying anything specifically about bacon or advising people not to eat saturated fat. But I remember a time when there were public service announcements advising people to reduce their consumption of fat. The problem is they never said to what level it should be reduced. So if you were already on a low fat diet you'd be likely to bring it down lower.

The govt has a lot to answer for in their war against saturated fats.
I'm not sure what level of saturated-fat-consumption the government is calling for at this time. But, if they are against it, they are not alone. There are several highly qualified medical doctors who have written books advising, among other things, to avoid excessive consumption of saturated fat.

I know we need some saturated fat in our diet but not very much. What happens if we don't get enough? Our body will manufacture it. I never heard of anyone dying from a lack of saturated fat (other than Anorexics which probably make up less than 1% of our population). As a matter of fact, anytime a person eats too much of anything and gains weight, the excess calorie-consumption gets converted to saturated fat in the body. And about 67% of Americans are overweight or obese. All of that excess fat is saturated fat. If anything, we have way too much of it in the U.S..
