Hey Hobbit, what is the health care system like in NZ? Is your system like our HMOs or do you have something similar to our PPOs?

    We have 5 complementary systems:

    1. A no-liability government accident insurance system that provides free total care to all accident victims (designed to keep lawyers and ambulance chasers out of health care). It is funded by a special tax levy.
    2. A primary health care system (GPs and suchlike - PHOs) heavily subsidised by the government (out of general taxes) with relatively small co-pays
    3. A fully free public hospital system (where access is sometimes an issue, but only for elective procedures). Also funded from general taxation.
    4. A largely free pharmaceutical system
    5. Private hospitals and consultants for patients who want and can afford to carry their own costs. Access is usually faster for elective procedures but requires expensive, additional (on top of health tax dollars) private medical insurance or deep pockets. They do no emergency or critical care work.

Overall it is a pretty good system. I have used all systems.

In your parlance, most parts of this system are funded on a single payer model. Much the same as most other English-speaking countries. Except you.

Thanks for the response. What I really want to know is:

can you go to a specialty doc on your own, or do you need a referral from a designated your doc?

Most referrals to specialists are from GPs after making an initial assessment. But self-referral is permitted. I have done it several times myself. However, the accident system I talked about requires a GP referral or direct emergency admission to hospital.

I think these single payer systems have shown they work pretty well in small, homogeneous countries. Canada's experience is a bit more spotty but overall probably more positive than not.

This isn't a small, homogeneous country.

It means majority white and intends on staying that way, You know, like New Zealand.

I assume D said blacks are a drain on the US economy.

    But I'm just guessing.
