I was out of town Friday through Saturday and have only seen this article about the riots. I guess what people have said above is likely true- the professional "anarchists" who do this stuff at the various World Bank events in the US.

DC police are good to normal protesters. At worse they will arrest you, process you, and give you a small fine and let you go. These guys are looking at 10 years.
