And how could the percentage of seats being up for grabs for each party be irrelevant? If the ONLY seats up for reelection were Democrats, how again could Democrats possibly gain seats?

If the only seats up for grabs were Democrats and they were in California and New York, they certainly aren't losing seats.

It's a moot point, the seats that will be up are not only held by Democrats.
