Russia's spy ship off our coast

I am usually in agreement with Donald Trump--and, to paraphrase the old saying, he should be compared to the alternative (which, last November, was Hillary Clinton), rather to the Almighty--but I will have to say that I am a bit troubled by his easy dismissal of a Russian spy ship's operating off the coast of Connecticut.

Yes, I would agree with him--in theory, at least--that it would be desirable to have better relations with Russia.

But that is not likely to happen, what with Vladimir Putin at the helm in Moscow. He is no Boris Yeltsin--or even Mikhail Gorbachev.

Moreover, the desire to have better relations has to be reciprocal, in order to work. And Putin evidently desires a Russia that dominates the entire world; and sees the US as an impediment to his longing.

If I were in the White House, I would instruct Putin to get that spy ship out of there within the next 24 hours.

And if he were to do so, then fine.

Otherwise, I would have the ship blown out of the water.

(No, this would almost certainly not begin WWIII, as some have suggested. Syria, for instance, downed a Russian warplane in November of 2015, and that did not start any war. Moreover, Putin is a pragmatist; he will push hard, to see just how much this new American administration will take--but he does not desire war with the US.)

That's actually pretty common. China does it, too.

    And, we return the favor.

You do realize that they patrolled there when Obama was in office too, right?

This is a non issue, the Russians have patrolled the coast of our country in international waters since WW2. We patrol their coast line as well, with ships, with planes, with satellites, China does it too and we do it to china. We send Intel ships all over the world and they do too.

Attacking it might not start WW3 but it would be a criminal act, an act of war and could get a lot of our own people killed.

Russian spy ship moves off Connecticut shore

    http://www.ctpost.com/local/article/...t-10934345.php

A Russian spy ship spotted south of the U.S. Navy’s submarine base in Groton, Conn. earlier this week has now been spotted off Virginia.

By late Wednesday night, the ship had moved south and was spotted approximately 65 nautical miles northeast of Norfolk, Va., home to one of the nation’s largest naval bases.

The Russian spy ship likely was returning to the Caribbean and Havana Harbor, an official told Fox News.

Reports of a Russian “spy ship” lurking in the Atlantic south of the sub base brought a swift response from the state’s congressional delegation.

On Wednesday morning, the Russian spy ship Viktor Leonov was seen about 30 miles south of U.S. Navy's primary East Coast sub base and home of the Coast Guard Academy in New London.

To begin with--as I previously said--I would give the Russians 24 hours advance notice. And if they complied, there would be no action on our part.

I am not sure what you mean by a "criminal act." (If you are referring to "international law," I would begin by noting that I simply do not recognize its validity--in any manner. For openers, it compromises any nation's individual sovereignty--which I hold very dear. Moreover, in order for "law" to have any meaning, there must be an authority to whom one answers. And just who would that "authority" be, anyway, who could punish the US for its actions?)

And I simply cannot imagine just how it might result in Americans being "killed"...

The spy ship is in international waters. They probably have a few "boomers" out there too just as we probably have our boomers off their coasts. I have pictures of Soviet spy trawlers from Vietnam off Yankee Station. It was in 1969 when we were "plane guarding" for the U.S.S. Enterprise during flight operations. It was code named "Ivan." We got close enough to them several times to see the crew waving at us (and us waving back.) On top of intercepting transmissions their other job was to "accidentally" keep getting in the way of the Enterprise and sometimes we got the job of accidentally getting in their way so they couldn't interfere with the Enterprise.
