China not happy over North Korean assassination

China not happy over North Korean assassination

It looks like China is none to happy with the North Korean leader these days. They had protected Kim Jong Nam for quite some time. And now the Dear Leader assassinates him. I wish China would take care of that country sooner rather than later.

China’s Foreign Ministry has been at its stonewalling, noncommittal best this week after news of the dramatic assassination of Kim Jong Nam, the half brother of North Korea’s leader, repeating the mantra that it has “noticed relevant media reports and is closely following developments.”

But behind the scenes, there is a sense of shock and dismay in Beijing, officials and experts say: If indeed Kim Jong Nam was assassinated on the orders of the North Korean leader, it would be seen as an affront to the country that has afforded him protection for many years.

I'm betting it was. We spent several weeks once protecting the second son of an Arabic leader from family politics (first son) for just that reason. Did everything but taste his food for him, and they had people to do that too.

The story just took a turn into the strange:

Indonesian woman ‘tricked’ into killing North Korean leader’s brother

If true that is some impressive tradecraft by the NK intel guys.

The Indonesian woman arrested for suspected involvement in the killing of the North Korean leader's half brother in Malaysia was duped into thinking she was part of a comedy show prank, Indonesia's national police chief said Friday, citing information received from Malaysian authorities.Tito Karnavian told reporters in Indonesia's Aceh province that Siti Aisyah, 25, was paid to be involved in "Just For Laughs" style pranks, a reference to a popular hidden camera show.

He said she and another woman performed stunts which involved convincing men to close their eyes and then spraying them with water.

"Such an action was done three or four times and they were given a few dollars for it, and with the last target, Kim Jong Nam, allegedly there were dangerous materials in the sprayer," Karnavian said.

"She was not aware that it was an assassination attempt by alleged foreign agents," he said.

Update: China takes economic action against North Korea- suspends coal imports, striking at regime's financial lifeline.
This is certainly good news. China is the best option for containing or ending the regime in the North.
China will suspend all imports of coal from North Korea until the end of the year, the Commerce Ministry announced Saturday, in a surprise move that would cut off a major financial lifeline for Pyongyang and significantly enhance the effectiveness of U.N. sanctions.

Coal is North Korea’s largest export item, and also China’s greatest point of leverage over the regime.

The ministry said the ban would come into force Sunday and be effective until Dec. 31.

Coal, Nukes, and a Mortuary Break-In: The Real-World Intrigue Surrounding the Killing of Kim Jong Nam

More on the assassination from Time.

Malaysian police investigating the death of Kim Jong Nam — the half-brother of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un — after he was attacked at Kuala Lumpur Airport on Feb. 13 say they want to speak with a North Korean diplomat and a staff member of North Korea's state-owned airline Air Koryo. However, the North Korean Embassy is reportedly not cooperating.

The announcement reinforces suspicions that Kim Jong Nam was assassinated on the orders of his estranged younger sibling, who may have feared the elder Kim was a political threat to his leadership of a country that has seen two dynastic successions. Two women can be seen on security camera footage holding a cloth over Kim Jong Nam’s face at the terminal, after which the 45-year-old began to feel ill. He eventually died en route to hospital.

North Korea businesses hurt by Kim Jong Nam assassination...

Report: Kim Jong Nam assassination cripples North Korea businesses
March 22, 2017 -- Southeast Asian sources of North Korea foreign currency earnings are rapidly dwindling in the aftermath of the assassination of Kim Jong Un's older half brother Kim Jong Nam.
Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai reported Wednesday the development is part of a larger trend that has culminated in the shutdown of 130 North Korea-operated restaurants in China and in Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia. In Jakarta, North Korea-run restaurant Pyongyang Raengmyon closed on Tuesday. A restaurant spokesman told the newspaper business was not good, and that all North Korean waitresses at the location are to return to their country of origin. Waitresses at North Korean restaurants generally serve food but also perform song and dance numbers for guests.

Ri Tong Il, a former North Korean deputy ambassador to the United Nations, speak to the media at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in February. North Korea’s foreign currency earnings are taking a hit in Malaysia and Indonesia after the assassination of Kim Jong Nam.

The restaurant's business was adversely affected by news of Kim Jong Nam's assassination because the incident involved the recruitment of a young Indonesian woman, Siti Aishah, as well as a Vietnamese accomplice, according to the report. Indonesian police and intelligence may also have stepped up surveillance of the restaurant in the wake of the murder. Malaysian authorities have said North Korean diplomats may have been involved in the assassination.

Kuala Lumpur has canceled an agreement that allowed North Korea passport holders to travel without visas. Malaysian travel agencies have stopped operating North Korea tourist programs, according to the Japanese newspaper. Singapore also issued a travel advisory on March 17 to its citizens, urging them not to travel to North Korea. Views of North Korea in Malaysia were generally positive prior to the assassination, the Nihon Keizai reported.

John McCain calls Kim Jong Un 'crazy' and 'fat' during interview
March 22, 2017 -- Kim Jong Un's nuclear and missile provocations are earning him more facetious nicknames on Capitol Hill.
On Wednesday, it was U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who called the North Korean leader a "crazy fat kid" during an interview on MSNBC's "For the Record with Greta." McCain is 80. Kim is believed to be 33. McCain made the remark when he suggested that Beijing should do more to control North Korea's bad behavior. "China is the one, the only one, that can control Kim Jong Un, this crazy fat kid that's running North Korea," McCain said. "They're the ones. They could stop North Korea's economy in a week."

The Republican senator from Arizona also said Kim was more extreme than Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. "He's not rational, Greta. We're not dealing even with someone like Joseph Stalin, who had a certain rationality to his barbarity," he said. Earlier in March, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, suggested Kim was behind the assassination of his older half-brother Kim Jong Nam.

The attack, which involved the use of internationally banned nerve agent VX, is a good reason to relist North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism, Cruz said Friday. But the views of Kim taking shape in Washington may be less likely to guarantee a diplomatic breakthrough, despite U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's commitment to work with China to mitigate aggression. Beijing wants dialogue to take priority over other concerns.

The U.S. military has not suspended joint drills on the peninsula, and on Wednesday U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis said strong nuclear and conventional forces must be maintained for North Korea's "reckless" and "provocative" behavior, according to Yonhap. "North Korea's reckless rhetoric and provocative actions continue despite United Nations censure and sanctions. This situation calls for our department to maintain a safe and secure nuclear deterrent and a decisive conventional force that can also fight irregular enemies, since our military must be able to counter all threats facing us," Mattis said.
