I, for one, would like to see a US-Russian rapprochement. The kooks will see this as evidence of Russian influence but...they're kooks. Who cares? We have much more in common with Russia historically and culturally than we do with China. We could gain by working together.

Trump having power over Putin is completely different than Trump controlling Putin. Which no one said in the first place.

I agree, I've long been a proponent of a better US-Russian relationship. When you look at the history of our two countries and why we're basically enemies nowadays it's frankly ridiculous, and completely unnecessary.

Russia and China are historic enemies. Two big dogs that share a very long border.

A big reason why they are historic enemies. Borders play into rivalries and conflicts more than casual observers realize.

Not many people know that US-Russian relations were generally good for the first century of our nation's existence. Things took a turn for the worse during the Russo-Turkish War but relations continued to reasonably amicable until the the Bolshevik regime acquired power.

Of course. That's clear now. I don't even bother to say "guys, you sound crazy" anymore.

True. And the land just north of that border is resource rich and people poor. I could see the Chinese making a play for those resources in this century.

And even during the Soviet Union days things weren't completely terrible. Our mutual interest in World War II preserved a pretty powerful alliance, and even during the Cold War we had our moments of rapprochement, particularly under the dual presidency-premiership of Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev.

Especially depending on how their play for the South China Sea goes. I think regardless of how that plays out they might make a play for those northern resources. If they succeed with the South China Sea, it emboldens them. If they fail, it makes them more desperate.
