The easiest way to make sure you do not get shot dead for breaking into someone's home when they are there, is not to do it.

I understand what you are saying about not knowing whether the person is armed or not, but shouldn't you try and find out before you kill him?

And, lol, you don't have any castles in the US.

Sure, you should try, but one could hardly blame them for failing under such circumstances. That intruder could be there to kill or rape and it's not really on me to find out what their intentions are. The lesson is: Don't violate other people's property rights in America.

No, not really. The family had a right to protect themselves at any cost. They didn't know if he was armed or unarmed, they don't have to risk themselves on any level for a criminal.

If you are in my house and you broke in you will get shot and I have every right to do so. Simple as that.

Just ask the intruder. I'm sure he'll be cooperative.

If someone is breaking into my home and they don't immediately retreat after a warning shot is fired, I'm going to reasonable suspect that the intruder is armed.

Now, if they are simply trespassing by cutting through my yard or sneaking into the hot tub on my patio, shooting them is not the appropriate course of action.

Sorry, but if someone has broken into my house in the middle of the night, I am not taking the time to ask him/her. I am doing what is needed to keep me and mine safe. I am not saying aim to kill, but I'm gonna stop you in your tracks.
And yes, we have castles... uber-wealthy people back in the early 1900's built some very nice castles. They aren't fortresses nor do they have the history of those in the rest of the world, but they exist. Also, the law that allows you to defend yourself in your own home (to include deadly force in some cases) is called the "Castle Doctrine".

Even if the intruder was drunk, he invited what he got, and the gene pool was improved.

If the guy runs away, no shots. He still has one choice left. His decision could make it my decision.
First choice? do it or don't
Second choice? Run while you can or proceed
