After WWII there was a general agreement that national borders could no longer be changed by force. But then we supported it in Serbia. Russia never let us live that one down. They have used that precedence in not just the Crimea, but Syria and elsewhere.

Competition can lead to advancement and growth under certain circumstances. In others, it's destructive of civilization. The period covered was one of relative cultural unity founded on a common (especially Catholic) heritage. Shared norms and expectations typically soften conflict. On the other hand, I doubt anyone would suggest Mongol depredations led to advancement and growth.
Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.
