Heating and AC , You're screwed

I didn't even realize...I guess this January the government , with their "efficiency" BS , made 14 SEER heating and air conditioning the minimum which can be sold in the U.S.
One of the manufacturers told us they are barley scraping by making 14 SEER equipment, if the government raises the minimum to 15 SEER (which I think they are already planning to do) then we're talking about high efficiency motors. In my area high efficiency motors average $1500.
The high efficiency equipment designers have a habit of placing several circuit boards into one system. circuit boards are $400 to $800. Many go out without any reason.
Like everything else, the government is going to save you 5 bucks on your monthly bill , but send the money back to the economy with high repair costs.

By-the-way, I heard something about a new refrigerant for cars, R1234 , currently selling for $1000 per jug

Well, you can always go old school - 4WD60. Four windows down and 60 miles an hour.

I have great air conditioning on my recumbent bicycle, cold beer and pedal faster! 8-10 miles to a 4 pack of pints. As the octane rises the mileage goes down and the risk of being pulled over rises!

Swap the beers for water and you're in business. Alcohol dehydrates you so....

Life is about balance. There is nothing wrong with have a beer now and then or even one every day, so long as you know your limitations. When the beer intrudes on making a living or having a normal life, it's got to go.

Maybe the Trump administration will roll back some of those ridiculous regulations. The new "energy saving" washing machines can't even do a good job of doing what you need a washing machine do, which is clean your clothes. They actually sell products now to "wash" your washing machine so your clothes don't stink! You have to periodically run a cycle with it to clean the machine. I run my washer with extra water and longer cycles. I'm probably using more electricity in the long run.

I replaced my "split unit" air conditioner about 5.5 years ago with a 5 ton heat pump. $5000 installed and that included tearing out the old furnace. Now my neighbors tell me that you have to pay well over $5000 just for the unit itself not including install. I've had a few HVAC people tell me that the new units last about half as long as the ones they installed 15 years ago.

the manufacturers aim for replacement after 12 years. They're still good for at least 20 though

"The high efficiency equipment designers have a habit of placing several circuit boards into one system. circuit boards are $400 to $800. Many go out without any reason."

I'll have to dig up a few of these bad boards and see what I can do. Maybe there is a market for improved rebuilt ones.
