SGT Smith served four tours with Bodza and held him as he was put down for health reasons.

That dog is more of an American hero that 90% of the population who have zero connection to the military.

The pair served side-by-side on four military tours before the soldier adopted him when Bodza retired in 2014.
It led Kyle to make the heartbreaking decision to put him down to end his suffering.
He remained by Bodza's side as he took his final breaths.

Kyle told WSOC he said "I'm going to miss you" during the pair's last moments.
    Standing. Hand salute.

How can you put sufficient appreciation and honor into tears, emotion and love to honor and salute a non-human member of our US armed services when so many of our so-called fellow citizens could give a care less for thier fellow human warrior/heroes killed in service. A service dog? Hell yes! And remember their fallen handlers. Please.

When the time came that my sister needed to have a beloved pet put down, she asked me - as I'd had to do it many times - how best to get through it, and how to deal with the aftermath.

I told her what I tell anyone else faced with that final duty to a loved one: Let your face be the last thing they see, and your voice be the last thing they hear. I'm not entirely sure why, but it truly does help.

I don't know what it is, but the death of dogs hits me harder than the death of people.
