Marriage, in my opinion, is largely an artifact of our transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture.
The sense of possession and exclusivity were meant mostly to establish paternity and resolve issues relating to the distribution of private property, especially with regards to inheritance.
Before that, humans were largely polyamorous, though not necessarily promiscuous.
